Engaging in Oral Discussions on Topical Issues
Topical issues are important subjects that affect our community, country, or the world. They are topics that people talk about because they matter to everyone. As Standard VI pupils, you should be able to discuss these issues confidently with your classmates and teachers.
When we discuss topical issues orally, we:
- Learn what is happening in our community and world
- Share our ideas and listen to others
- Practice speaking English fluently
- Develop critical thinking skills
- Prepare to be responsible citizens
In Tanzania, some key topical issues include:
1. The Environment
- Protecting forests and wildlife
- Keeping our surroundings clean
- Recycling plastic materials
- Planting trees and seedlings
- Water conservation
2. Gender Equality
- Equal opportunities for boys and girls
- Sharing household responsibilities
- Education for all children
- Preventing discrimination
3. Corruption
- Reporting corrupt practices
- Being honest in daily life
- Supporting good governance
- The importance of transparency
Brainstorming
Brainstorming is a way to generate ideas quickly. The teacher shows a picture or writes a topic, and all pupils say words related to that topic.
Example:
Topic: Protecting Our Environment
Pupils might say: trees, seedlings, plastic bags, recycling, cleaning, water, soil, pollution, mangoes, shade, fresh air
Chain Discussion
In chain discussion, pupils sit in a circle. Each pupil adds one idea to the discussion in turn. Everyone must listen carefully and build on what others said.
Example:
Topic: Why Should We Plant Trees?
- Pupil 1: Trees give us fruits.
- Pupil 2: Trees provide shade.
- Pupil 3: Trees prevent soil erosion.
- Pupil 4: Trees give us fresh air.
- Pupil 5: Trees make our school beautiful.
Debate
In a debate, the class is divided into two teams. One team supports a statement, and the other team opposes it. Each team presents reasons to support their position.
Example Debate Statement:
"Primary school pupils should help in community cleaning activities."
Team A (Agree):
- Cleaning keeps our community healthy
- Pupils learn responsibility
- It teaches teamwork
Team B (Disagree):
- Pupils may miss lessons
- They may be exposed to dangerous materials
- They need time for homework and rest
When participating in oral discussions, use these phrases:
Expressing opinions:
- "I think that..."
- "In my opinion..."
- "I believe that..."
- "My view is..."
Agreeing:
- "I agree with you."
- "That's a good point."
- "Yes, I share the same view."
Disagreeing politely:
- "I see your point, but..."
- "I don't quite agree because..."
- "However, I think differently because..."
Adding more ideas:
- "Also..."
- "In addition..."
- "Moreover..."
- "Besides..."
Scenario: Your class is forming an Environment Club. Discuss what activities the club should do.
Steps:
- Brainstorm first – think of all activities related to the environment
- Choose three activities together as a group
- Practice using the discussion phrases above
- Present your group's ideas to the class
Possible activities to discuss:
- Planting fruit trees in the school compound
- Cleaning the school surroundings every Friday
- Recycling plastic bottles and bags
- Creating a seedling nursery
- Visiting a nearby forest to learn about conservation
Topic: How Can We Protect Our Environment?
Teacher: What can we do to protect our environment?
Amina: I think we should plant more trees. Trees give us fresh air and fruits.
Rajabu: I agree with Amina. Also, we should not throw plastic bags everywhere. They pollute the soil.
Grace: That's true. We can recycle plastic bags and use them again for planting seedlings.
David: In my opinion, we should also clean our school compound every day. A clean environment prevents diseases.
Teacher: Those are excellent ideas! Who can summarize what we have discussed?
Juma: We should plant trees, avoid plastic pollution, recycle materials, and keep our surroundings clean.
- Listen carefully when others are speaking
- Take turns and do not interrupt
- Speak clearly so everyone can hear you
- Use complete sentences in English
- Stay on the topic being discussed
- Respect different opinions, even when you disagree
In Tanzania, you will often need to discuss important issues in your community. For example, when your village holds a meeting about building a new dispensary or improving water supply, you can use these discussion skills to share your ideas confidently. Being able to speak well in groups helps you participate in school activities, community decisions, and future job interviews where clear communication is essential.
