Reading Short Texts for Comprehension
When we read for comprehension, we do more than just say the words aloud. We understand what we read. We think about the story, remember the important details, and can answer questions about what happened. Good readers can tell the main idea of a story, find specific information, and understand new words from the sentences around them.
Step 1: Read the Title First
The title tells us what the story is about before we begin. For example, "A bad man paid the price" makes us wonder: Who is the bad man? What did he do?
Step 2: Read the Text Aloud Carefully
Read each sentence slowly and clearly. Pay attention to the characters' names and what they do. In the story "Two friends went fishing," the characters are Monde and Tutu.
Step 3: Look for the Main Idea
The main idea is what the whole story is about. In "Two friends went fishing," the main idea is: Two friends caught a big fish together at the river.
Step 4: Find Specific Details
Look for answers to these question words:
- Who – names of people or animals
- What – actions or things that happen
- Where – places
- Why – reasons
- How – the way something happens
Step 5: Learn New Words from Context
Sometimes we see a word we do not know. We can guess its meaning from the other sentences. For example, in "A bad man paid the price," the word "corruption" appears. From the story, we learn corruption means giving money or gifts to get special treatment — and it is described as "the enemy of justice."
Read this short story and answer the questions:
Two friends went fishing
Monde and his friend Tutu went fishing at the river. Monde caught a very big fish. He screamed, "Tutuuu! Tutuuu! Come! I have caught a big fish." Tutu ran towards Monde and helped pull the fish out of water.
Questions and Answers
(i) What did Monde catch? Monde caught a very big fish.
(ii) Why did Monde scream? Monde screamed because he caught a big fish and wanted Tutu to come and see.
(iii) What did Tutu do? Tutu ran towards Monde and helped pull the fish out of the water.
Notice how we find the answers by looking back at the text. This is called scanning — reading to find specific information.
- Read the title first to guess what the story is about
- Read each sentence carefully
- Ask yourself: Who? What? Where? Why? How?
- Look back at the text to find answers
- Learn new words by reading the sentences around them
- Share your opinion about the story
When you practice reading at home:
- Read the story aloud twice — first for fun, second to find details
- Close the book and tell the story in your own words
- Ask yourself questions about what you read
- Try to explain what new words mean using the story
In Tanzania, you use reading comprehension when you read a notice at the market, follow instructions on a medicine packet, or understand a text message from a relative. For example, if you receive a written message saying "Mwanzo alikuja saa tano, atacheza kesho saa kumi" (Mwanzo came at five, he will play tomorrow at ten), you must understand who came, when, and what will happen next — just like answering questions about a story. This skill helps you make good decisions in daily life.
