- Explain the relationship between human activities and environmental conservation (Agriculture, fishing, lumbering, livestock keeping and mining)
- Describe methods of protecting environment (planting flowers and trees/lawn grass and various ways to tackle waste in the environment)
Human Activities and Environmental Conservation

Human activities are actions that people do to meet their needs and earn a living. The main human activities that use natural resources include:
- Agriculture — growing crops and vegetables
- Fishing — catching fish from rivers, lakes, and oceans
- Lumbering — cutting down trees for wood and timber
- Livestock keeping — raising animals such as cattle, goats, sheep, and chickens
- Mining — digging into the earth to extract minerals like gold, tanzanite, and coal
Every human activity uses resources from the environment. When we use these resources carefully, the environment stays healthy. When we use them carelessly, the environment gets damaged.
Agriculture
Farmers need land, water, and healthy soil to grow food. If farmers:
- Use too many chemicals, the soil loses its fertility
- Cut down trees to get more farmland, the soil erodes
- Waste water, rivers and wells dry up
But when farmers conserve the environment, they:
- Use organic manure instead of chemicals
- Plant trees around farms to prevent soil erosion
- Irrigate crops carefully to save water
Fishing
Fish live in water sources like lakes, rivers, and the ocean. If fishermen:
- Catch too many fish at once, fish numbers decrease
- Use nets with very small holes, young fish are caught
- Dump waste into water, fish die from pollution
But when fishermen conserve the environment, they:
- Catch only adult fish, letting young fish grow
- Use legal fishing nets
- Keep water sources clean so fish can thrive
Lumbering (Cutting Trees)
Trees provide wood for building, cooking, and making furniture. If lumberjacks:
- Cut trees without planting new ones, forests disappear
- Cut trees on steep hills, soil erosion occurs
- Burn forests to clear land, air pollution increases
But when lumberjacks conserve the environment, they:
- Cut only some trees and plant new ones
- Use wood carefully without wasting
- Establish tree nurseries to grow seedlings
Livestock Keeping
Animals like cattle, goats, and chickens provide milk, meat, and income. If livestock keepers:
- Allow too many animals to graze in one area, grass dies and soil erodes
- Let animals drink from rivers, the water becomes dirty
- Do not manage animal waste, it pollutes the environment
But when livestock keepers conserve the environment, they:
- Rotate grazing areas so grass can regrow
- Provide clean water for animals in troughs
- Compost animal waste to make fertilizer
Mining
Minerals like gold, tanzanite, and coal are extracted from the earth. If miners:
- Dig large holes and leave them open, people and animals can fall in
- Use chemicals to separate minerals, rivers become polluted
- Clear land without restoring it, the land becomes useless
But when miners conserve the environment, they:
- Fill in holes after mining
- Dispose of chemicals safely
- Replant trees and grass on restored land
The relationship is simple: human activities depend on the environment, and the environment must be protected for these activities to continue.
When we conserve our environment:
- Farmers will always have fertile soil to grow crops
- Fishermen will always have fish to catch
- Lumberjacks will always have trees to harvest
- Livestock keepers will always have grass for their animals
- Miners will always have minerals to extract
When we damage the environment:
- Crops fail because soil is exhausted
- Fish die because water is polluted
- Animals have no grass to eat
- Rivers dry up
- Land becomes useless
Mwalimu Anna is a farmer in Arusha. She grows maize and beans on her farm. In the past, she used chemical fertilizers and cut down trees to get more land. After three years, her soil became poor and her crops failed. She also noticed that the nearby river had less water.
Then Mwalimu Anna learned about environmental conservation. She started:
- Using compost manure instead of chemicals to keep soil fertile
- Planting trees around her farm to prevent soil erosion
- Collecting rainwater to irrigate crops during dry seasons
- Planting different crops together to protect the soil
Now her farm produces good harvests, the river has clean water, and her family has enough food to eat. This shows that when human activities like agriculture work with environmental conservation, everyone benefits.
| Human Activity | How to Conserve While Doing It |
|---|---|
| Agriculture | Use organic manure, plant trees, save water |
| Fishing | Catch only adult fish, keep water clean |
| Lumbering | Plant new trees, use wood wisely |
| Livestock keeping | Rotate grazing areas, manage waste properly |
| Mining | Restore land after mining, dispose waste safely |
- Human activities need natural resources from the environment
- Environmental conservation means protecting and preserving our environment
- When we conserve the environment, human activities can continue for a long time
- When we damage the environment, human activities suffer
- Everyone has a responsibility to conserve the environment
In Tanzania, a small-scale miner in Geita can apply this topic by using safe ways to separate gold from soil, such as panning instead of using mercury. After mining, the miner can fill the holes and plant grass or trees to restore the land. This way, the miner's livelihood continues while the environment stays protected for future generations.
