- Explain the concept of the earth's relief (meaning, main features-mountain, hills, plateaus, plains, basins and their distribution)
The earth's relief is the appearance of various shapes of land on the earth's surface. These different shapes create the landscapes we see around us every day.
The earth's relief tells us how the land looks. Some places have high land, some have low land, and some are flat. These land shapes are called relief features. The relief of a place affects how people live, farm, and build their homes.

Mountains
A mountain is a landform that is very high above the ground. Mountains have steep slopes and a pointed or rounded top called a peak or summit. The peak of a tall mountain may have snow and ice on it.
Example from Tanzania: Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Tanzania and all of Africa. It is 5,895 metres tall and is located in Kilimanjaro Region. Its peak is covered with ice and snow because it is very cold at the top. Other mountains in Tanzania include Mount Meru in Arusha and Mount Rungwe in Mbeya.
Hills
A hill is a landform that rises to a moderate height above the ground. Hills are lower than mountains and do not have very steep slopes. They also have peaks like mountains.
Example from Tanzania: Hills in Tanzania include Mererani in Manyara, Ngorongoro in Arusha, and the Sekenke hills in Singida.
Plateaus
A plateau is a large area of flat elevated land. It is raised above the surrounding land but has a flat top like a table.
Example from Tanzania: The Southern highland plateau is found in Iringa, Mbeya and Njombe regions. Kitulo National Park is located on this plateau.
Plains
A plain is a flat or nearly flat area of land. Plains have very gentle slopes and are usually low-lying. They have nearly the same height all around.
Example from Tanzania: Parts of Serengeti and Tarangire National Parks are plains. The plains near Lake Victoria are also important farming areas.
Basins
A basin is a bowl-shaped area of lower land. Some basins contain water and form lakes. Others are dry.
Example from Tanzania: Lake Victoria is a basin that contains water. It borders Mwanza, Kagera, Mara, Simiyu and Geita regions. It is the largest lake in Tanzania and Africa.
Tanzania has many different relief features:
- Mountains are found in Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Mbeya, Morogoro and Tanga regions
- Hills are found in Manyara, Arusha, Singida and Iringa
- Plateaus are found in the Southern highlands (Mbeya, Njombe, Iringa)
- Plains are found in Serengeti, Tarangire and areas near Lake Victoria
- Basins with lakes are found in many regions, including Mwanza, Kagera and Kigoma
- Mountains and hills attract rainfall and are sources of rivers and streams
- Valleys and plains have fertile soil suitable for farming
- Mountains, plateaus and lakes are tourist attractions
- Some rivers in valleys can be used to generate electricity
- Plains are good for building houses and roads because they are flat
When farmers in Tanzania choose where to grow crops, they must think about the relief of the land. For example, rice grows well in flat valley areas near rivers because those places hold water. Maize and millet grow better on plains and gentle slopes because those areas have good soil drainage. A farmer in Mwanza near Lake Victoria might choose to grow rice in the low-lying basin areas, while someone in the Mbeya highlands might grow tea on the plateau slopes. Understanding relief helps people use land in the best way for farming, building homes, and protecting the environment.
