Basic Steps in Conducting Scientific Investigations
A scientific investigation is a step-by-step way of finding answers to questions about the world around us. It helps us discover why things happen and test our ideas.

There are eight main steps to follow when conducting a scientific investigation:
1. Identify the Problem
First, you need to know what question you want to answer. What is the problem you want to solve?
Example: Why did the amaranth in my friend's garden grow better than mine?
2. Formulate a Hypothesis
A hypothesis is an intelligent guess about what might be the cause of the problem. It gives direction to your investigation.
Example: I think the amaranth grew poorly because it did not get enough water.
3. Prepare Materials for the Experiment
Gather all the things you need to carry out your investigation. Having the right materials helps you collect correct information.
Example: Seeds, soil, water, two garden plots, ruler, notebook, pencil
4. Conduct the Experiment and Collect Data
Do the experiment carefully and write down what you observe. Collect information such as measurements, numbers, or descriptions.
Example: Plant amaranth seeds in two separate plots. Water plot A every day but give no water to plot B. Measure the height of plants every two days and write down the numbers.
5. Analyze the Data
Look at the information you collected. Sort it, organize it, and compare the results.
Example: Compare the heights of plants in plot A and plot B. Make a table to see the difference clearly.
6. Interpret the Results
Explain what your analyzed data means. This helps others understand what you found out.
Example: The plants that received water grew taller than the plants that did not receive water.
7. Draw a Conclusion
State whether your hypothesis was correct or not based on the results.
Example: My hypothesis was correct. The amaranth grew poorly because it lacked water.
8. Write a Scientific Report
Write down all the steps you followed and what you found. This shares your findings with others.
Two children grew amaranth in their gardens. One child's amaranth grew well, but the other child's did not grow well. They wanted to find out why.
Step 1 - Problem: Why did one garden of amaranth grow better than the other?
Step 2 - Hypothesis: The amaranth in the second garden probably did not get enough water.
Step 3 - Materials: Amaranth seeds, two garden plots, water, hoe, ruler, notebook, pencil
Step 4 - Experiment:
- Plant amaranth seeds in both plots
- Water plot 1 every morning and evening
- Do not water plot 2
- Measure plant height every two days
Step 5 - Data Analysis:
| Garden | Day 1 | Day 3 | Day 5 | Day 7 | Day 9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Watered | 1 cm | 2 cm | 4 cm | 6 cm | 8 cm |
| Not watered | 1 cm | 1 cm | 1 cm | 1 cm | 2 cm |
Step 6 - Interpretation: The watered amaranth grew much taller than the unwatered amaranth.
Step 7 - Conclusion: There is a relationship between water availability and amaranth growth. The hypothesis is correct.
Step 8 - Report: Write down all the steps and findings in a notebook.
- Scientific investigation follows a systematic order
- A hypothesis is an educated guess, not a random guess
- Always record your observations in a notebook
- Your conclusion should match your data
- A good investigation uses fair testing — only change one thing at a time
In Tanzania, farmers use scientific investigation steps to improve their crops. For example, a farmer in Morogoro who grows tomatoes can investigate why some tomato plants yield more fruit than others. By following the same steps — identifying the problem, making a hypothesis about fertilizer or water, testing it in their shamba, and recording results — they can grow better tomatoes and earn more money at the market. This helps families increase their harvest and improve their daily lives.
