- Identify different objects in the environment
- Identify living and non-living things
- Identify the main groups of living things (plants and animals)
Main Groups of Living Things
Living things are all around us. The two main groups of living things are plants and animals.

Plants are living things that can make their own food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. They have three main parts: roots, stem, and leaves.
Plants are divided into two groups:
- Flowering plants — plants that produce flowers and fruits containing seeds. Examples: mango tree, maize plant, bean plant, banana plant, sunflower
- Non-flowering plants — plants that do not produce flowers but produce naked seeds. Examples: pine tree, fern plant
Animals are living things that cannot make their own food. They depend on plants or other animals for food.
Animals are divided into two groups:
- Vertebrates — animals that have a backbone or vertebral column
- Invertebrates — animals that have no backbone
Vertebrates (Animals with Backbone)
Vertebrates are divided into five groups:
| Group | Examples | Where they live |
|---|---|---|
| Mammals | goat, dog, cow, human, bat | on land (some in water) |
| Birds | chicken, crow, dove, eagle | on land and in air |
| Fish | tilapia, catfish, Nile perch | in water |
| Reptiles | lizard, snake, crocodile, turtle | on land and in water |
| Amphibians | frog, toad | on land and in water |
Invertebrates (Animals without Backbone)
Examples: snail, earthworm, grasshopper, butterfly
The two main groups of living things are:
- Plants — flowering and non-flowering
- Animals — vertebrates (with backbone) and invertebrates (without backbone)
Identify the group for each living thing:
| Living thing | Main group | Sub-group |
|---|---|---|
| Mango tree | Plant | Flowering plant |
| Chicken | Animal | Vertebrate (Bird) |
| Tilapia | Animal | Vertebrate (Fish) |
| Grasshopper | Animal | Invertebrate |
| Pine tree | Plant | Non-flowering plant |
| Frog | Animal | Vertebrate (Amphibian) |
In Tanzania, farmers need to know the difference between plants and animals to care for them properly. For example, a farmer in Mwanza keeping chickens (animals, vertebrates, birds) must provide them with food, water, and shelter, while growing maize (plants, flowering plants) requires planting seeds, watering, and ensuring they get sunlight. Understanding these groups helps farmers take care of their crops and livestock to get good harvests and products like eggs, milk, and vegetables.
