Growth in Animals and Plants
Growth is the increase in body size, height, and weight in living things. It is an irreversible change, meaning once something grows, it cannot go back to its smaller size. Both plants and animals grow through cell division, cell elongation, and cell differentiation. This process continues until the organism reaches its adult size.

Plants grow through several stages. First, a seed germinates when it gets sunlight, water, air, nutrients, and the right temperature. During germination, the radicle (the embryonic root) emerges first and anchors the seedling into the soil. Then the plumule (the embryonic shoot) grows upwards and becomes the stem and leaves.
After germination, the seedling develops more leaves and stronger roots. This is the vegetative stage where the plant makes its own food through photosynthesis. Eventually, the plant enters the reproductive stage and produces flowers, fruits, and seeds. Finally, in the senescence stage, the plant ages and some parts die.
Essential Requirements for Plant Growth
Plants need five essential things to grow well:
- Sunlight — Plants use sunlight to make food through photosynthesis. Without light, plants cannot make food and will not grow properly.
- Air — Plants need carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and oxygen to burn food for energy.
- Water — Water dissolves nutrients in the soil so roots can absorb them. Water also helps transport food through the plant and regulates temperature.
- Nutrients — Minerals like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential for plant growth. Plants get these from the soil.
- Optimum temperature — Seeds need the right temperature to germinate, and plants need warmth to make food. Too hot or too cold temperatures can stop growth or kill the plant.
Animals also grow by increasing in height and weight. Animal growth depends on:
- Nutrition — Animals need a balanced diet with proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Lack of nutrients causes poor growth.
- Environmental conditions — Animals need suitable temperature and good air quality to grow well.
- Water — Clean water is essential for digestion, temperature control, and transporting nutrients in the body.
Stages of Growth in Animals

Different animals go through different growth stages. For example:
- A butterfly grows through: Egg → Larva → Pupa → Butterfly
- A frog grows through: Eggs → Tadpole → Tadpole with legs → Frog
- A human grows through: Infancy → Childhood → Adolescence → Adulthood → Old age
Human Growth Stages

- Infancy (birth to 2 years) — Babies learn to hold their head, sit, crawl, walk, and develop milk teeth.
- Childhood (2 to 13 years) — Children grow taller and heavier, lose milk teeth, and develop skills like running, drawing, and self-feeding.
- Adolescence (12 to 18 years) — This is when puberty happens. Boys and girls experience physical, mental, and emotional changes.
- Adulthood (18 to 65 years) — Physical growth slows down. Adults make decisions and take responsibility.
- Old age (65 years and above) — The body becomes weaker, hair turns grey, and vision and hearing may decrease.
A student planted a bean seed in a container with soil. She watered it daily and placed it in sunlight.
| Day | Observation |
|---|---|
| 1-5 | Seed swelled but no visible change |
| 6-10 | Radicle emerged and grew downward |
| 11-15 | Plumule appeared and grew upward; first leaves formed |
| 16-20 | Plant grew taller; more leaves appeared |
| 21+ | Plant continued to grow taller with a strong stem |
This shows how a plant grows through different stages from seed to seedling.
In Tanzania, small-scale farmers in places like Arusha or Mbeya apply this knowledge when they plant crops like beans, maize, or tomatoes. They make sure their crops get enough sunlight, water, and nutrients by watering regularly and adding compost or fertilizers to the soil. Understanding plant growth helps farmers know why their crops may not be growing well — for example, if a tomato plant stays small and yellow, it might need more water or nitrogen-rich fertilizer to grow properly.
