The human digestive system is the group of organs in our body that work together to break down food into small parts that the body can use for energy and growth.
The digestive system is also called the digestive tract or alimentary canal. It is a long tube that starts at the mouth and ends at the anus. Its job is to take in food, break it down, absorb the useful parts, and remove the waste.

1. Mouth
- The mouth is where food enters the body.
- Teeth chew food into smaller pieces.
- Saliva (spit) mixes with food and starts to break it down.
- The tongue moves food around and helps with swallowing.
2. Esophagus (Food Pipe)
- The esophagus is a tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.
- It uses squeezing movements called peristalsis to push food down to the stomach.
- No digestion happens here.
3. Stomach
- The stomach is a bag-like organ that holds food.
- It mixes food with gastric juices (acid and enzymes).
- These juices kill germs and break down protein.
- Food stays in the stomach for about 2 to 5 hours.
4. Small Intestine
- The small intestine is a long, coiled tube where most digestion happens.
- It is called "small" because it is narrower than the large intestine, not because it is shorter.
- Enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver help break down food.
- The walls of the small intestine absorb the broken-down nutrients into the blood.
- This is where the body takes in food energy.
5. Large Intestine (Colon)
- The large intestine is wider but shorter than the small intestine.
- It absorbs water from the leftover food.
- It also stores the solid waste (poo) until it leaves the body.
6. Rectum and Anus
- The rectum stores waste material.
- The anus is the opening where waste leaves the body.

Let us follow a banana through the digestive system:
-
In the mouth — You chew the banana with your teeth. Saliva mixes with it and starts breaking down the sugars.
-
In the esophagus — You swallow the banana. The esophagus squeezes it down to your stomach.
-
In the stomach — Gastric juices mix with the banana and turn it into a soft mixture.
-
In the small intestine — Enzymes finish breaking down the banana. The nutrients pass through the intestinal walls into your blood. Your body uses these nutrients for energy and growth.
-
In the large intestine — Water is absorbed from the remaining material.
-
Out of the body — The waste leaves through the anus.
This is how your body gets energy from food!
Understanding the digestive system helps you make good food choices. Eating balanced meals keeps your digestive system working well and gives you energy for school, playing, and helping at home.
In Tanzania, knowing how the digestive system works helps you understand why eating local foods like ugali, mboga, and fruits is important for your health. When you eat these foods, your body breaks them down in the digestive system and uses the nutrients to give you energy for activities like fetching water, walking to school, or playing with friends. Eating a variety of foods helps your body stay strong and grow well.
