Friendly Letters

Friendly or personal letters are used to express your thoughts and feelings, or to communicate casually with someone. Both the content (what you say) and the form (how it looks) are important, as they reflect who you are and what you want to convey.

Types of Letters

There are two main types of letters:

  1. Personal/Friendly Letters
  2. Business/Official Letters

Features of a Friendly/Personal Letter

  1. Date

    • The letter must include the date it was written.
  2. Address of the Recipient

    • The recipient’s address is not important in personal letters.
  3. Salutation (Greeting)

    • Start with greetings like:
Dear Mother, Dear Father, Dear Friend, Hello Jack, Hi Mary, etc.
  4. Opening

    • You can start the letter any way you feel. There are no strict rules.
  5. Content

    • You can include as many topics as you like.
    • Feel free to switch between topics.
    • You may include jokes, funny stories, questions, or short updates.
  6. Ending

    • Use casual and friendly endings such as:
Bye bye, Please write, Take care, Your love, Lots of love, Your friend, etc.

Sample Friendly Letter AZANIA SEC SCHOOL P.O. BOX 9074 DAR ES SALAAM 12TH FEBRUARY, 2015 Dear Queen, Many thanks for your letter. You certainly deserved this result as I know you worked very hard. I have been waiting so eagerly for the results of the examinations I did too. I must admit that I have not done half the things I planned to do during this holiday. However, I have been doing a lot of revision. I have read two books on Geography and some novels. I will certainly let you know my examination results as soon as possible. Your sincerely, Lots of love, Take care, Your friend,
