Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants convert sunlight into chemical energy, stored as glucose.
The leaf is one of the three main organs of a plant, alongside the root and the stem. It is a thin, flat structure designed for efficient absorption of sunlight and exchange of gases. Leaves are usually green due to the presence of chlorophyll, a pigment that captures sunlight for photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis
What it is: Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants convert sunlight into chemical energy, stored as glucose.
How it happens in a leaf:
- Chlorophyll in the leaf captures sunlight.
- The leaf absorbs carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air through tiny pores called stomata.
- Water (H₂O), absorbed by roots and transported via the stem, reaches the leaves.
- Using sunlight, CO₂ and H₂O are converted into glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆) and oxygen (O₂).
Gaseous exchange
Leaves play a major role in the exchange of gases between the plant and the environment.
Stomata:
- Tiny openings located on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf.
- Surrounded by guard cells that control their opening and closing.
- During the day, stomata open to allow carbon dioxide in for photosynthesis and oxygen out as a byproduct.
- At night or when water is scarce, stomata close to conserve water.
Transpiration
What it is: Transpiration is the process of water loss in the form of vapor from the leaf's surface, mostly through the stomata.
Why it's important:
- Cooling: Transpiration cools the plant, preventing overheating.
- Water movement: It helps draw water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant through a process called capillary action.
- Maintains turgor pressure: Ensures cells remain firm and the plant stays upright.
Other roles
- Storage: Some leaves store food (e.g., cabbage) or water (e.g., aloe vera).
- Protection: Leaves like cactus spines prevent water loss and protect the plant from herbivores.
