Latitude parallels

  1. Latitude lines, also known as parallels, are imaginary lines that run east-west around the Earth.
  2. They are used to measure the distance north or south of the Equator.
  3. The Equator is at 0° latitude, and the lines increase in degree towards the poles, up to 90° North and 90° South.

Meridians (longitude)

  1. Meridians are also called longitudes. They are imaginary lines that run north-south from the North Pole to the South Pole.
  2. Meridians are numbered in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian (0°).
  3. The Greenwich Meridian (0° longitude) is the Prime Meridian, and it passes through Greenwich, England. This line is the reference point from which all other meridians are measured.

Latitude and longitude

Latitude: Is the angular distance north or south of the equator measured in degrees, minutes and seconds. Also, can be defined as the lines drawn on a map from east to west.

  1. The equator is latitude of 0°
  2. The equator divides the earth into two equal parts (Hemisphere)
  3. The hemisphere north of the equator is northern hemisphere
  4. The hemisphere south of the equator is known as Southern hemisphere
  5. Latitude is also known as parallel lines of equator because they never meet.
  6. The lines of latitude are measured from 0° (the equator) to 90° north and south.

Lines of latitude are:

  1. The equator 0°
  2. The tropic of cancer 23½°N
  3. The tropic of Capricorn 23½°S
  4. Arctic circle 66½°N
  5. Antarctic circle 66½°S
