The history of the United Republic of Tanzania
The history of the United Republic of Tanzania is rooted in the independence struggles of two regions: Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
- Tanganyika's Independence: Tanganyika gained its independence on December 9, 1961, under the leadership of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere. Nyerere, through the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU), led the country to independence and became its first Prime Minister.
- Zanzibar's Independence: Zanzibar, under Sheikh Abeid Aman Karume's leadership, fought for independence from the Sultan's government. The revolution, led by the Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP), succeeded on January 12, 1964, making Zanzibar independent. Sheikh Abeid Aman Karume became Zanzibar's first President after the revolution.
- Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar: On April 26, 1964, Tanganyika and Zanzibar united to form the United Republic of Tanzania. Mwalimu Julius Nyerere became the first President of the new republic, while Sheikh Abeid Aman Karume became the Vice-President of Tanzania and the President of Zanzibar.
