What is weather?

Weather is the condition of the air around us at a certain time. Sometimes the weather is hot, sometimes it is cold. It can also be sunny, rainy, or windy. Weather changes from time to time.

Elements of weather

There are different things that help us to know the weather. These things are called elements of weather. The main elements of weather are:

Temperature

  1. Temperature tells us how hot or cold the air is.
  2. When the sun is shining, the temperature is high, and we feel hot.
  3. In the morning or at night, the temperature is low, and we feel cold.
  4. We use a thermometer to measure temperature.

Rainfall

  1. Rainfall is the water that falls from the sky in the form of rain.
  2. When it rains, the ground becomes wet, and plants get water to grow.
  3. Too much rain can cause floods, and too little rain can cause drought.
  4. We use a rain gauge to measure the amount of rainfall.

Clouds

  1. Clouds are white or grey things we see in the sky.
  2. Clouds help to bring rain. When the clouds are dark, it means rain may come soon.
  3. If there are no clouds, the sky is clear, and we get sunshine.

Sunshine

  1. Sunshine is the light and heat we get from the sun.
  2. It helps plants to grow and gives us warmth.
  3. Too much sunshine can make the land dry, and we may feel very hot.

Wind

  1. Wind is moving air. Sometimes the wind is strong, and sometimes it is weak.
  2. Wind helps to bring rain clouds and can also make us feel cool when the weather is hot.
  3. We use a wind vane to show the direction of the wind.

Humidity

  1. Humidity is the amount of water in the air.
  2. When there is a lot of humidity, the air feels sticky, and we sweat a lot.
  3. When there is little humidity, the air feels dry.

Importance of weather

Knowing the weather helps us in many ways:

  1. Choosing the Right Clothes – When it is hot, we wear light clothes, and when it is cold, we wear warm clothes.
  2. Planning Our Activities – If we know it will rain, we carry umbrellas. If it is sunny, we can go outside to play.
  3. Farming – Farmers need to know the weather to plant and harvest their crops at the right time.
  4. Traveling – If it is rainy, roads may be muddy. If it is windy, boats may not be safe to use.
  5. Staying Healthy – If it is too hot, we need to drink a lot of water. If it is too cold, we need to wear warm clothes to avoid getting sick.
