Concept of matter

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. In simple terms, anything that you can touch or feel—provided it has some weight and takes up space—is considered matter. Everything around us, from the air we breathe to the water we drink, is made of matter.

There are many types of matter. Some common examples include water, soil, plants, animals, air, clothes, metals, and plastic. All these are forms of matter because they have mass and take up space.

The word matter is used to describe all substances and materials that make up the Earth and the entire universe.

Any specific type of matter is called a substance. Substances can be classified into two major types:

  1. Elements: These are pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Examples of elements include oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and iron.
  2. Compounds: These are substances formed when two or more elements are chemically combined. For example, water is a compound made from hydrogen and oxygen.

All matter is made up of tiny building blocks known as atoms, ions, or molecules:

  1. Atoms are the smallest units of an element that still retain the properties of that element.
  2. Molecules are groups of atoms bonded together. For example, one molecule of water is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom (H₂O).
  3. Ions are atoms or groups of atoms that carry an electric charge, either positive or negative.
