- The three states of water
- The freezing point of water
- The boiling point of water
The boiling point of water is the temperature at which water changes from a liquid to a gas (steam or vapor).
Boiling point of water
- Temperature: The boiling point of water is 100°C (212°F) at standard atmospheric pressure (1 atmosphere or 101.3 kPa).
- Process: As water is heated, its molecules gain more energy and move faster. When the temperature reaches 100°C, the water molecules have enough energy to break free from the liquid and form steam. This process is called vaporization.
Factors affecting the boiling point
- Pressure: The boiling point changes with atmospheric pressure. For example, at higher altitudes where atmospheric pressure is lower, water boils at a temperature below 100°C. In a pressure cooker, where the pressure is higher than normal, water boils at a temperature above 100°C.
