Structure and nomenclature of carbonyl compounds

Carbonyl compounds

Carbonyl compounds are organic compounds that contain a carbonyl group (C=OC=O) as their functional group. These compounds are divided into two main categories based on the groups attached to the carbonyl group:

  • Ketones: In ketones, the carbonyl group is directly bonded to two alkyl groups, two aryl groups, or one alkyl and one aryl group. The general structure of a ketone can be represented as:

    RC=ORR-C=O-R'

    Here, R and R' can be alkyl or aryl groups.

  • Aldehydes: In aldehydes, the carbonyl group is directly bonded to at least one hydrogen atom. The general structure of an aldehyde can be represented as:

    RC=OHR-C=O-H

    Here, R can be an alkyl group, aryl group, or hydrogen atom.

Both aldehydes and ketones share the same general molecular formula, CnH2nOC_nH_{2n}O, making them isomers (exhibiting position isomerism). While they share many similar properties, differences arise due to variations in their structures.

Nomenclature of carbonyl compounds

The naming of carbonyl compounds follows these rules:

  1. The parent chain must contain the carbonyl group (C=OC=O).
  2. Numbering of the carbon chain is done as follows:
    1. For aldehydes, the carbon in the carbonyl group is always assigned the first position.
    2. For ketones, numbering starts from the end closer to the carbonyl group. For ketones with more than four carbons, the position of the carbonyl group is indicated using Arabic numerals.
  3. For aldehydes:
    1. Replace the suffix "-e" from the corresponding hydrocarbon name with "-al."
  4. For ketones:
    1. Replace the suffix "-e" from the corresponding hydrocarbon name with "-one."
  5. All other rules for naming are the same as those for alkanes.
