Structure and nomenclature of hydroxyl compounds

Introduction

Hydroxyl compounds include alcohols and phenols, which are organic compounds containing the hydroxyl group (-OH) as their functional group.

  1. Alcohols: Formed when at least one hydrogen atom of an aliphatic hydrocarbon is replaced by a hydroxyl group.
  2. Phenols: Formed when a hydrogen atom is replaced from benzene to form compounds containing an -OH group attached to an aromatic ring.

Despite similarities in their functional group, alcohols and phenols exhibit different properties due to differences in their structures.

Classification of alcohols

Alcohols are classified based on the number of alkyl groups directly bonded to the carbon atom attached to the hydroxyl group (-OH):

  1. Primary (1°) Alcohols: In these alcohols, the carbon atom with the -OH group is directly bonded to one alkyl group and two hydrogen atoms.

    CH₃CH₂OH (Ethanol)

  2. Secondary (2°) Alcohols: In these alcohols, the carbon atom with the -OH group is directly bonded to two alkyl groups and one hydrogen atom.

    CH₃CHOHCH₃ (Isopropanol)

  3. Tertiary (3°) Alcohols: In these alcohols, the carbon atom with the -OH group is directly bonded to three alkyl groups and no hydrogen atoms.

    (CH₃)₃COH (Tert-butanol)

Nomenclature of alcohols and phenols

The rules for naming alcohols are similar to those for alkanes, with specific modifications:

  1. The parent chain must contain the hydroxyl (-OH) group.
  2. Numbering starts from the end closer to the -OH group.
  3. The position of the hydroxyl group is indicated by Arabic numerals.

The name of the alcohol ends with the suffix "-ol" (after removing "e" from the corresponding alkane name).

Examples

  1. 4-Cyclopropyl-2-tert-butylpentanol structure

4-Cyclopropyl-2-tert-butylpentanol: A compound containing a cyclopropyl and tert-butyl group on a pentanol chain.

  2. Pent-3-en-1-ol structure

Pent-3-en-1-ol: A pentanol with a double bond at the third carbon and the -OH group at the first carbon.

  3. Pent-3-yn-2-ol structure

Pent-3-yn-2-ol: A pentanol with a triple bond at the third carbon and the -OH group at the second carbon.

  4. 1-Phenylmethanol structure

1-Phenylmethanol: A phenyl group attached to a methanol group.

  5. Pyrogallol structure

2,3-Dihydroxyphenol: A benzene ring with hydroxyl groups at positions 2 and 3 (also called 1,2,3-trihydroxybenzene).

  6. 2-Nitrophenol structure

2-Nitrophenol: A phenol compound with a nitro (-NO₂) group at position 2 on the benzene ring.

  7. 2-tert-Butyl-4-methoxyphenol structure

    2-tert-Butyl-4-methoxyphenol
