Ensuring your safety is a sign of caring and valuing yourself. In order to be safe, you should always avoid risky behaviour.

Examples of risky behaviors

1. Not following traffic rules like crossing the road without looking.
2. Playing with sharp objects like knives or broken glass.
3. Talking to strangers alone especially when no trusted adult is around.
4. Engaging in fights or violence which can cause injuries.
5. Ignoring hygiene and health practices like not washing hands, which can make you sick.

How to stay safe

1. Always listen to your parents, teachers, and trusted adults.
2. Follow rules and safety guidelines.
3. Think before you act—if something feels unsafe, don't do it.
4. Stay in safe places and avoid dangerous situations.
5. Ask for help when unsure about something.

Effects of childhood sex and drug abuse

Childhood sex and drug abuse are examples of risky behaviour.

1. Physical Health Issues

   • Sexual abuse: Can lead to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), physical injury, unwanted pregnancies, and long-term reproductive health issues.
   • Drug abuse: Can damage organs such as the liver, brain, and lungs. It may also stunt physical growth and impair cognitive development.

2. Mental Health Problems Both sexual and drug abuse can result in anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health disorders. These issues can persist into adulthood, making it hard to form healthy relationships or cope with stress.

3. Emotional and Behavioral Impact Children who experience these abuses often struggle with trust issues, self-esteem problems, and feelings of worthlessness. They may also engage in risky behaviors as a way to cope with their trauma.
