In East Africa, a day is divided into daytime and nighttime. Daytime is counted starting from 7:00 am and continues up to 6:59 pm. Nighttime starts from 7:00 pm and continues up to 6:59 am.
The daytime has 12 hours and nighttime has 12 hours. Also, daytime is divided into the following time: morning, afternoon and evening. The nighttime is divided into night, midnight and late night.
Internationally, a day is divided into 24 hours. A new day starts at 12:00 midnight and ends at 11:59 pm. Due to these time formats, time is generally read and written in two formats, which are 12 hours and 24 hours formats.
The 12 hours format can be read and written in Kiswahili and in English (am and pm). In Tanzania, there are various ways of reading time. One of these ways is reading time in English.

The second part of the day starts at 12:00 noon and continues up to 11:59 pm.
Therefore, from noon up to the end of the day, there are 12 hours divided into afternoon, evening and night as follows:

12:01 pm - Afternoon 7:00 pm - Night
1:00 pm - Afternoon 8:00 pm - Night
2:00 pm - Afternoon 9:00 pm - Night
3:00 pm - Late Afternoon 10:00 pm - Night
4:00 pm - Evening 11:00 pm - Night
5:00 pm - Evening 12:00 - Midnight
The 24 hours format is the international time format which is commonly used in reading and writing time. People from countries that differ in time zones may easily communicate to each other about time by using the 24 hours format.
