Properties of Magnets

1. Magnets Attract Things Made of Iron Magnets are capable of attracting materials made from magnetic substances such as iron, steel, nickel, and cobalt. These materials are called magnetic materials. Magnets can either attract or repel these materials, depending on the direction of the poles.
2. Magnetic Force is Strongest at the Poles The magnetic force is not evenly distributed across the entire magnet. It is strongest at the North and South poles, which are the ends of the magnet. This is why the poles are the most active parts of the magnet in attracting or repelling objects.
3. Like Poles Repel and Unlike Poles Attract Like poles repel each other: The North Pole of one magnet will repel the North Pole of another magnet, and the South Pole of one magnet will repel the South Pole of another magnet.
4. Unlike poles attract each other: The North Pole of one magnet will attract the South Pole of another magnet. Similarly, the South Pole of one magnet will attract the North Pole of another magnet.
