Properties of hydrogen

Physical properties

  1. Colorless, tasteless, and odorless: Hydrogen is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless gas, making it undetectable by human senses unless it is in a reaction.
  2. Solubility in water: It is almost insoluble in water. Only about 2 volumes of hydrogen gas dissolve in 100 volumes of water at 8°C.
  3. Lightest gas: Hydrogen is the lightest of all gases. It is approximately 20 times lighter than air. For example, one liter of hydrogen at 0°C and 760 mmHg pressure weighs only 0.0899 grams.
  4. Condensation and freezing: Hydrogen condenses into a colorless liquid at -254°C, and freezes into colorless crystals at -259°C.
  5. Neutral to litmus: Hydrogen is neutral to litmus paper, meaning it does not exhibit acidic or basic properties.
  6. Does not support combustion: Despite being flammable when mixed with oxygen, hydrogen gas itself does not support combustion in its pure form.

Chemical properties

  1. Reaction with oxygen:

    • Hydrogen combines easily with other chemical substances, especially at high temperatures. For instance, when hydrogen reacts with oxygen, it forms water.

    Reaction:

    2H2(g)+O2(g)2H2O(l)2\text{H}_2(g) + \text{O}_2(g) \rightarrow 2\text{H}_2\text{O}(l)

    • At room temperature, hydrogen and oxygen do not react, but a mixture of the two gases will explode if exposed to high temperatures or a flame.
  2. Acts as a reducing agent:

    • Hydrogen acts as a reducing agent, which means it can remove oxygen from certain compounds. For example, copper (II) oxide is reduced to copper when heated in a stream of hydrogen.

    Reaction:

    CuO (s)+H2(g)Cu (s)+H2O (l)\text{CuO (s)} + \text{H}_2(g) \rightarrow \text{Cu (s)} + \text{H}_2\text{O (l)}

  3. Neutral gas:

    • Hydrogen is neither acidic nor basic, making it a neutral gas. It does not react with litmus paper to change its color.
  4. Explosive mixture with oxygen:

    • A mixture of hydrogen and oxygen is highly explosive when ignited. The reaction of hydrogen with oxygen releases a significant amount of energy, resulting in an explosion.
