Mining Mining is a process of extracting minerals from the earth. Minerals are a collection of solid chemical substances which are found in the earth's crust. Examples of minerals are gold, diamond, iron, coal, copper and salt. Salt is obtained through the evaporation of ocean water, which leaves behind salt crystals. Also, salt can be obtained through the evaporation of underground salty water. Mining can be done using simple machines or hands with the help of simple tools such as hoes and pick axes. Small-scale miners use simple tools. Larger-scale mining uses huge plants and machinery.

The Benefits of Minerals
Mining is beneficial to individuals and the nation.
- Job Creation: Mining provides employment opportunities.
- Raw Materials: Supplies industries with essential materials like gold, silver, and diamonds.
- Uses of Minerals:
- Gold, Silver, Diamonds: Used for making ornaments.
- Salt: Used domestically and for preserving food like fish and meat.
- Diamond: Used for cutting, drilling, and shaping hard materials.
- Foreign Currency: Minerals are exported to earn revenue from other countries.
- Promoting Tanzania: Unique minerals like Tanzanite make Tanzania recognized globally.
The Negative Effects of Mining on the Environment
- Environmental Degradation: Improper mining leads to environmental harm.
- Soil Erosion: Mining creates large ditches, making land unsuitable for farming.
- Air Pollution: Dust and smoke from mining cause respiratory, eye, and ear diseases.
- Chemical Pollution: Chemicals like mercury from mining contaminate soil and water, harming plants, animals, and humans.
- Flood Risks: Mining areas, like Mererani and Geita, often face floods due to vegetation loss, which prevents water absorption into the soil.
Ways to Reduce Negative Effects of Mining
- Use Proper Methods: Adopt sustainable mining practices.
- Fill Ditches: Refill large ditches left after mining.
- Restore Vegetation: Plant trees and grass in affected areas.
- Treat Waste: Treat gaseous and liquid waste before releasing it into the environment.
- Environmental Assessment: Conduct environmental impact assessments before mining.
- Follow Laws: Ensure miners comply with land use and mining regulations.
