What is voltage?

Voltage is the amount of electrical energy that pushes electric current through a circuit. It is measured in volts (V) using an instrument called a voltmeter.

How to measure voltage

To measure voltage in a circuit, follow these important rules:

1. Use a Voltmeter – A voltmeter is the instrument used to measure voltage.
2. Connect in Parallel – The voltmeter is always connected in parallel with a resistor (or the component whose voltage is being measured). This ensures accurate voltage readings.
3. Correct Wiring – Ensure that the voltmeter's positive (+) terminal is connected to the positive side of the component, and the negative (-) terminal is connected to the negative side.
4. Do Not Connect in Series – A voltmeter should never be connected in series because it has a very high resistance and may block current flow.

• Always use the correct voltage range on the voltmeter.
• Do not exceed the voltmeter's maximum limit.
• Ensure proper connections to avoid incorrect readings or damage to the voltmeter.
