Key Activities in Intensive Reading:

1. Understanding the Front Cover:

   • Writing and pictures on the cover summarize or give a hint about the content of the book.
   • These elements provide an introduction to the book's theme.

2. Title of the Class Reader:

   • The title reflects the main topic or theme discussed in the chapters.

3. Author:

   • The author is the person who writes the book.
   • It's important to memorize the author's name.

4. Main/Chief Character(s):

   • The main character (or protagonist) is the primary actor or focus of the story.

5. Minor Characters:

   • These are secondary characters, which may include animals or other persons in the story.

6. Setting:

   • The setting refers to the venue or place where the story takes place (e.g., Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, Kampala).

7. Difficult Words:

   • Select difficult words and understand their meanings.
   • This can be done by either using a dictionary or understanding their meaning based on how they are used in the context of the story.

8. Summarizing Each Chapter:

   • Summarize each chapter in one or two sentences.
   • At the end, summarize the whole book in one to five sentences.

9. Lessons Learned:

   • Reflect on the lesson(s) one can learn from the book.

10. Importance/Significance of the Book:

    • Consider the relevance or significance of the book in society.
    • Is it still useful or applicable today?

Intensive vs. Extensive Reading

1. Intensive Reading involves reading deeply, focusing on comprehension and understanding.
2. Extensive Reading refers to reading widely, usually a lot of different books, without focusing on deep comprehension.

Skimming vs. Scanning

1. Skimming:

   • Narrow down the information into one sentence or a brief passage.

2. Scanning:

   • Read intensively for specific information.
