Institutions mandated to defend and protect human rights
Human rights must be constitutionally and legally protected to improve the well-being of people in society. To fully protect human rights, there must be bodies with the authority to enforce and defend them. Examples of such institutions and organizations in Tanzania include the Parliament, the Judiciary, the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), the Tanzania Media Women's Association (TMWA), the Tanzania Women Lawyers' Association (TWLA), the Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP), special needs organizations, the media, and the Constitution. These organizations perform various functions in defending and protecting human rights. Their roles are described below.
- The Judiciary: The main functions of the Judiciary are to enforce and protect human rights, interpret the Constitution and human rights, interpret laws related to human rights, and provide justice to citizens.
- The Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania: Parliament enacts laws that protect and defend human rights. It also discusses human rights issues, including violations and solutions. Additionally, Parliament may establish a commission to investigate human rights violations, discuss them, and adopt resolutions to protect human rights.
- The Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRGG): This commission has various responsibilities regarding human rights, including strengthening efforts to defend and protect human rights, investigating violations, conducting research on human rights issues, initiating court proceedings, investigating complaints about human rights violations, ensuring the country signs international human rights treaties, and harmonizing domestic and international human rights laws.
- The Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB): This institution is responsible for preventing and combating corruption in the country. It protects and promotes human rights by ensuring there are no violations in service delivery in courts, hospitals, educational institutions, and other places.
- Tanzania Media Women's Association (TMWA): This organization advocates for the defense and protection of women's rights in society.
- Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP): This program promotes gender equality by protecting and promoting the rights of both men and women.
- Tanzania Women Lawyers' Association (TWLA): This association provides legal assistance to women and children whose rights have been violated.
- Organizations for People with Special Needs: These organizations advocate for the rights of people with special needs, including their rights related to disabilities and equal representation in decision-making bodies.
- The Media: The media provides information to the public and exposes human rights abuses, helping relevant authorities take action against those violating human rights.
- The Constitution: The Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania outlines human rights in Articles 12 to 24. These include freedom of opinion and expression, the right to life, and the freedom to practice any faith. The government and its institutions are responsible for protecting these rights as mandated by law. Therefore, the Constitution helps ensure that the government, institutions, and individuals uphold human rights at all times.
