Classification of commerce
Commerce is broadly classified into two main categories: Trade and Aids to Trade. These categories encompass the various activities involved in the exchange and distribution of goods and services.
Trade
Trade refers to the process of buying and selling goods and services. It ensures that goods produced by manufacturers reach the final consumers. Trade is classified into two types:
Home Trade
Trade conducted within the boundaries of a country.
- Wholesaling: The sale of goods in large quantities to retailers or other merchants.
- Retailing: The sale of goods in smaller quantities directly to consumers.
Foreign Trade
Trade conducted between different countries.
- Import Trade: Buying goods from other countries.
- Export Trade: Selling goods to other countries.
- Entrepot Trade: Importing goods from one country for the purpose of re-exporting them to another country.
Aids to trade
Aids to trade refer to activities and services that facilitate the smooth conduct of trade. These include the following:
- Transportation: The movement of goods from producers to consumers or markets using different modes of transport such as road, rail, sea, or air.
- Communication: Ensures the flow of information between buyers, sellers, and other stakeholders. Examples include phones, emails, and advertising.
- Warehousing: The storage of goods until they are needed for sale or distribution. Warehousing ensures a continuous supply of goods and prevents spoilage or wastage.
- Banking: Provides financial support and services such as loans, credit facilities, and payment systems that help in trade activities.
- Insurance: Protects businesses against risks like theft, fire, or damage to goods during transportation.
- Advertising: Informs and persuades customers about goods and services, promoting sales and creating demand.
- Packaging: Ensures goods are safely packed for transportation, storage, and presentation to consumers.
