Environmental destruction caused by extraction of metals

Mining and mineral extraction play an important role in economic development and general human welfare. Without mining, we would not have essential products such as cars, computers, handsets, and washing machines, all of which simplify work and improve the quality of our lives. Environmental problems caused by mining

1. Land Subsidence: Holes underneath the ground cause an imbalance in the weight of the soil above, which may lead to severe damage to buildings, roads, railway tracks, and other infrastructure.
2. Poisonous Substances: Mining can release toxic compounds like lead, cadmium, and arsenic, which may be washed into the soil and streams, contaminating the environment.
3. Large Volume of Waste: Mining produces waste that includes earth from the soil, gangue, and toxic chemicals used in metal extraction. These waste materials can be washed into rivers and streams.
4. Noise and Dust: Mining activities produce noise and dust from haulage trucks, rock blasting, crushing, drilling operations, and heavy traffic, causing environmental disturbances.
5. Big Holes in the Ground: Mineral extraction leads to the creation of deep holes in the ground as miners search for rich ores.
6. Great Heaps of Earth Material: After metal extraction, unwanted rock materials are often heaped up in tips, causing environmental clutter.
7. Soil Erosion: Natural vegetation around mining sites is cleared before mining, leading to soil erosion in the area.
8. Air Pollution: Large-scale mineral extraction results in the emission of harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and other pollutants into the atmosphere.

Suggested intervention measures to rectify environmental destruction

Governments are imposing stricter regulations on mining companies to prevent environmental damage. Some of the intervention measures include:

1. Strict Waste Management: Governments enforce controls on the production of toxic waste, ensuring that it does not cause environmental damage.
2. Mining Reclamation: Mining reclamation activities are carried out gradually. This includes levelling heaps of earth, replacing the topsoil with fertile soil, and planting trees in the mined-out areas to restore the environment.
3. Dust Control: Dust levels can be reduced by spraying water on roads, stockpiles, and conveyors to minimize air pollution.
4. Noise Control: Noise pollution can be reduced by carefully selecting equipment, using insulation, and installing enclosures around machinery to reduce sound emissions.
5. Treatment of Toxic Substances: The poisonous and toxic substances used in metal extraction must be treated properly before being released into rivers and streams to prevent contamination.
