Diffusion

We often sense different smells, both good and bad, in our surroundings. These smells may come from nearby or far away. For example, the smell of food can spread from the kitchen or dining room to other parts of the house, creating a desire to eat the food.

This spreading of smell occurs through diffusion. Diffusion is the movement of particles of matter from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

2. Example 2: The spreading of perfume smell in a room.

Importance of Diffusion

Diffusion plays a significant role in the daily lives of humans and living things. Some of its important functions include:

1. In the environment: It allows perfume or chemicals sprayed in one part of a house or car to spread evenly throughout the area.
2. In plants:
   • It enables carbon dioxide gas to penetrate plant leaves for photosynthesis.
   • It allows oxygen gas to exit plant cells through the stomata.
3. In animals:
   • It enables carbon dioxide gas to leave animal cells and enter the bloodstream.
   • It helps in the absorption of food in the animal digestive system.
4. In reproduction and survival:
   • It allows the nice smell of flowers to attract pollinators like insects.
   • It helps animals recognize the location of other animals by sensing their smell.

Harmful Effects of Diffusion

Although diffusion has many benefits, it can also lead to harmful effects. These include:

1. Spreading of harmful gases:
   • Polluted air from car emissions, cigarette smoke, pesticides, and factory gases spreads by diffusion, potentially harming the health of humans and animals.
   • Smoke from waste burning areas can travel to residential areas.
2. Water pollution: Dumping chemicals in one part of a dam causes the chemicals to spread throughout the water, harming aquatic life and other living things dependent on the water.
