Controlling environmental destruction in Tanzania
The United Republic of Tanzania has taken various measures to control environmental destruction and respond to disasters. These measures include:
- Establishing rules and regulations to manage the environment.
- Encouraging environmental conservation activities.
- Promoting the use of alternative sources of energy.
Tanzania enacted the Environmental Management Act No. 20 of 2004, which serves as the main law for environmental conservation in the country. The Act prohibits activities that can harm the environment, including:
- Construction along oceans, beaches, lakes, rivers, or dams.
- Burning forests and polluting water sources with waste or chemicals.
- Mining sand from beaches.
- Diverting or blocking water from its natural course.
This Act has significantly helped reduce environmental destruction by enforcing penalties on violators. Penalties include:
- Paying fines.
- Demolishing unplanned settlements along water sources and mountains.
- Prosecuting individuals who break the law.
To mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, Tanzania introduced the Forest Act No. 14 of 2002, which regulates the use of forest products and reduces forest destruction. If fully implemented, this law will:
- Ensure the conservation of forests.
- Reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
To control air pollution from older vehicles, the Tanzanian government has imposed an additional 30% tax on non-utility vehicles older than 10 years from their manufacturing date. According to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), this law aims to:
- Encourage people to buy newer, more environmentally friendly vehicles.
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants.
An alternative source of energy is any energy source used instead of the primary source. In Tanzania, firewood and charcoal are major sources of cooking energy. Using alternative sources can help reduce environmental pollution. Such alternatives include:
- Coal.
- Charcoal made from crop or timber remains.

The alternative sources of energy to hydro electric power include:
- Solar energy
- Natural gas
We can generate electricity using solar panels in sunny areas as well as using natural gas.
Natural gas electricity
Natural gas is harnessed from the soil and rocks through drilling and used as a fuel. Natural gas can be used to generate electricity. Such electricity can help to reduce the use of hydro electric power to generate electricity. The use of electricity from natural gas has contributed to the increase in electricity to the national grid. Figure 8 shows part of equipment for harnessing natural gas electricity.

Solar Energy
Solar energy is derived from the sun. This energy can be converted into electricity. Solar energy is an alternative source of energy to generate electricity for different items such as lights, fridges, television sets, phones, and cookers.
