Diseases are often spread by vectors, which are organisms that carry and transmit harmful pathogens (germs) to humans. Many vectors are insects, including mosquitoes, tsetse flies, houseflies, ticks, bedbugs, fleas, and lice. These insects can transmit various diseases that affect human health. Below are examples of vectors and how we can control them to prevent diseases:
Mosquitoes are one of the most common disease-transmitting insects. They breed in stagnant water found in containers, old tyres, coconut shells, roof gutters, animal footprints, small pools, and ditches. Mosquitoes can spread diseases like malaria, dengue, and yellow fever.
To effectively control mosquitoes, we can:
- Spray insecticides onto stagnant water: This kills mosquito larvae and prevents them from growing into adult mosquitoes.
Spraying insecticides in mosquito-breeding sites
- Pour oil (like kerosene) on stagnant water: This forms a thin layer on the water, suffocating the mosquito larvae.

- Clean the environment: Regularly clean and remove items that collect stagnant water, such as containers, tires, and other discarded materials.

Tsetse flies transmit sleeping sickness, which is a serious disease. These flies are typically found in forests and bushes, where they breed and feed on animals. People who live near forests or visit them for activities like grazing, hunting, or farming are at risk of being bitten by tsetse flies.
To control tsetse flies, we can:
- Wash animals with insecticides: Before moving livestock from one area to another, wash them with insecticides to kill any tsetse flies that may be on them.
- Spray insecticides in bush and forest areas: Use special airplanes to spray insecticides over areas where tsetse flies live.
- Slash the grass and bushes around our homes: Cutting the grass and burning it reduces the places where tsetse flies can hide.
Houseflies breed in dirty places, such as decayed organic materials (food waste, animal waste, etc.). They can spread diseases like diarrhoea and cholera.
To control houseflies, we can:
- Remove food remains: Dispose of food scraps and waste properly to prevent houseflies from using them as breeding sites.
- Wash and store utensils properly: Clean all cooking utensils and keep them in a safe, hygienic environment to prevent contamination.
- Clean waste water channels: Regularly clean drains and water channels to prevent flies from breeding in dirty water.
- Screen windows and doors: Use mesh screens on windows and doors to keep houseflies from entering the house.
- Keep toilets and latrines clean: Ensure that toilets and latrines are regularly cleaned to avoid attracting flies.
- Cover dustbins with proper lids: Ensure that all waste bins are tightly covered to keep flies from accessing the trash.
