Definition of Health
Health is a state of being physically, mentally, and socially well, and free from diseases. Good health contributes to personal, family, and national development. Health services are those provided to patients, families, and communities by medical workers. These services are offered by both government and private organizations to promote community health.
Types of Health Services
Community health services are provided to special groups of people, such as:
- Children
- Pregnant women
- Youth
- The elderly
- Patients with HIV/AIDS, non-infectious diseases (e.g., diabetes, high/low blood pressure, asthma)
Private organizations, including religious and charitable groups, may also provide these services.
The availability of health services in the community is important for several reasons:
-
Lowering Medical Treatment Costs for Patients with Non-infectious Diseases Many individuals suffering from non-infectious diseases cannot afford medical treatment, as some may not be able to engage in productive work. Providing community health services helps reduce deaths related to these conditions.
-
Reducing Treatment Costs for Pregnant Mothers and Children Under 5 Community health services, including vaccination, counselling, and medical checkups during pregnancy, aim to minimize mother and child deaths. These services help predict delivery dates and treat children under five years old. Parents are encouraged to visit health centers to reduce mortality.
-
Promoting a Healthy Life for Ill-health services help maintain overall well-being in the community.
-
Reducing the Severity of Chronic and Epidemic Diseases Health services help reduce the impact of chronic and epidemic diseases in the community.
-
Preventing New Infections (HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis) Counseling and treatment services prevent new infections in clinics for diseases like HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.
-
Supporting the Elderly Health services help the elderly who cannot afford regular healthcare.
-
Protecting and Educating Youths Health education and guidance prevent infectious diseases (e.g., AIDS, hepatitis B, tuberculosis). Healthy youths contribute to national development by remaining productive.
-
Guidance for Pregnant Mothers and Their Partners Psychological and emotional training prepares mothers and fathers for challenges during pregnancy. They also receive counseling on pregnancy care, STD prevention, and HIV testing (e.g., syphilis, gonorrhea).
Community health services are often offered at hospitals, health centers, and dispensaries. These services include:
- Checkups for diabetes, blood pressure, HIV, and tuberculosis
- Counseling on proper use of medicines and maintaining a balanced diet
- Sexual and Reproductive Health Education for youths
- Child Care and Maternal Health Education
- Cost-free or Affordable Medical Treatment for children and pregnant women
- Health Services for the elderly and youth
Various groups in the community require special health services:
- Children
- Pregnant Women
- Youth
- Elderly
- People with Non-infectious Diseases (e.g., diabetes, heart diseases, cancer, asthma)
- People with HIV/AIDS
