Classification of flowers

Flowers are classified into two main groups based on their structure and composition:

A. Complete and incomplete flowers

  1. Complete flowers A complete flower has all four floral parts: sepals, petals, stamens, and pistil. Such flowers are also referred to as bisexual flowers, as they contain both male and female reproductive organs. Examples: sunflower, Hibiscus sp., tomato.

  2. Incomplete flowers An incomplete flower lacks one or more of the floral parts. These can be either:

    • Staminate (male) flowers – possess stamens only; lacking pistil.
    • Pistillate (female) flowers – possess pistil only; lacking stamens.

Incomplete flowers are also called unisexual flowers, as they contain only one type of reproductive organ. Examples of unisexual flowers: maize, pawpaw.

B. Flower sexuality based on plant distribution

  1. Monoecious plants These are plants that have both male and female flowers on the same individual. Examples: maize, banana, squashes.
  2. Dioecious plants These are plants in which male and female flowers are found on separate plants. Examples: pawpaw, date palm, spinach, yam.

C. Flower symmetry

  1. Actinomorphic flowers These are flowers that can be divided into two equal halves by any vertical plane passing through their center. They are radially symmetrical and also known as regular flowers. Examples: rose, hibiscus.
  2. Zygomorphic flowers These are flowers that can be divided into two equal halves only by one plane. They are bilaterally symmetrical and also known as irregular flowers. Examples: pea flower, bean flower.
