Playing Football and Netball
Football and netball are two major team sports played in Tanzania and around the world. Both games involve two teams competing to score goals, but they differ in how the ball is handled, the number of players, and the rules. This study note will help you learn how to play both sports correctly.

What is Football?
Football is a team sport played between two teams, each with 11 players including a goalkeeper. The objective is to score goals by kicking the ball into the opponent's goal. A goal is scored when the ball completely crosses the goal line between the goalposts.
Football Equipment
To play football correctly, you need the following equipment:
- Football: A round ball made of leather or synthetic material
- Football boots: Shoes with spikes for grip on the ground
- Shin guards: Protective gear for the lower legs
- Goalposts: Two posts with a net for scoring
- Whistle: Used by the referee to control the game
- Jerseys: Team uniforms to identify players
Basic Skills in Football
1. Passing
Passing is kicking or heading the ball from one teammate to another. There are two main types:
- Short pass: Kicking the ball to a teammate nearby using the inside of the foot
- Long pass: Kicking the ball to a teammate far away using the top of the foot
Example: During a game, if your teammate is standing 3 meters away, use a short pass with the inside of your foot. If your teammate is 20 meters away, use a long pass with the top of your foot.
2. Receiving the Ball
This skill involves controlling the ball using your foot, thigh, chest, or head. The goal is to gain full control before passing or shooting.
Example: When a ball comes to you through the air, you can control it by letting it hit your chest and then bringing it down to your feet.
3. Dribbling
Dribbling means controlling the ball while moving forward by walking or running. You use small kicks to keep the ball close to your feet while bypassing opponents.
Example: Practice dribbling 20 meters by starting slowly, then gradually increase your speed while keeping the ball under control.
4. Shooting
Shooting is kicking the ball toward the opponent's goal to score. A good shot requires:
- Kicking with power and accuracy
- Using different parts of the foot
- Positioning your body correctly
5. Defending
Defending means preventing the opponent from scoring. You can defend by:
- Man-to-man: Following your opponent closely
- Zonal: Staying in your assigned area of the field
- Tackling: Taking the ball from the opponent using your feet without committing a foul
Basic Rules of Football
- A match lasts 90 minutes (two halves of 45 minutes each)
- Each team has 11 players, including the goalkeeper
- A goal is scored when the ball crosses the goal line completely
- A player is offside if they receive the ball in front of defenders
- A foul occurs when a player breaks the rules against an opponent
What is Netball?
Netball is a team sport played between two teams of seven players each. The objective is to score goals by throwing the ball through the opponent's hoop (net). Only the Goal Shooter (GS) and Goal Attack (GA) can score goals, and they must shoot from inside the goal circle.
Netball Equipment
To play netball correctly, you need:
- Netball: A lighter ball similar to a basketball
- Goal posts: Posts with rings and nets
- Uniform: Team jerseys and shorts/skirts
- Whistle: For the referee
Playing Positions in Netball

Each player has a specific area where they can play:
| Position | Abbreviation | Allowed Area |
|---|---|---|
| Goal Shooter | GS | Goal circle (opponent), attacking third |
| Goal Attack | GA | Goal circle (opponent), centre third, attacking third |
| Wing Attack | WA | Centre third, attacking third |
| Centre | C | Any area except goal circles |
| Wing Defence | WD | Defensive third, centre third |
| Goal Defence | GD | Defensive third, centre third, goal circle |
| Goalkeeper | GK | Defensive third, goal circle |
Basic Skills in Netball
1. Passing
Passing in netball is throwing the ball to a teammate. There are three main types:
- Chest pass: Throwing the ball from your chest to your teammate's chest using both hands
- Bounce pass: Throwing the ball so it bounces once before reaching your teammate
- High pass: Throwing the ball over the heads of opponents
Example: If an opponent is blocking your path, use a high pass to throw the ball over them to your teammate.
2. Catching and Controlling the Ball
To catch effectively:
- Keep hands open with fingers pointing forward
- Absorb the ball's momentum by softening your hands on impact
- Track the ball with your eyes at all times
Example: When receiving a fast pass, stretch your hands forward and pull back slightly when the ball arrives to reduce the impact.
3. Movements
In netball, you cannot run with the ball. You can take one or two steps to change direction before passing or shooting. Good footwork helps you maintain balance and move quickly.
4. Shooting
Shooting is throwing the ball into the goal to score. To shoot effectively:
- Hold the ball correctly (one or two hands depending on distance)
- Bend your knees slightly, then push up for power
- Aim at the top of the net
- Release the ball with a slight backspin
5. Defending
Defending prevents the opponent from passing or scoring. The two main types are:
- Man-to-man: Follow your assigned opponent
- Zonal: Stay in your area and block opponents
Basic Rules of Netball
- A match has four quarters of 15 minutes each
- Each team has 7 players on the court
- A player cannot run with the ball
- Only GS and GA can shoot for goals
- A player cannot hold the ball for more than 3 seconds
Steps for Playing Football
- Warm up before playing to prevent injuries
- Use the correct equipment (football, boots, shin guards)
- Apply proper skills: Pass accurately, receive the ball control, dribble with close ball contact, shoot toward goal corners
- Follow the rules: Respect the referee, avoid fouls, play fair
- Work as a team: Communicate with teammates, support each other
Steps for Playing Netball
- Warm up your body before the game
- Know your position and stay in your allowed area
- Pass and catch the ball accurately
- Use proper footwork - take only one or two steps when holding the ball
- Shoot only if you are GS or GA
- Defend by blocking passes and staying close to your opponent
In Tanzania, football and netball are played in schools, community grounds, and during national competitions. After learning these sports, you can join your school team to compete in inter-school tournaments, play with friends at the playground during your free time, or even become a professional player who represents Tanzania in regional and international competitions. Playing these sports also helps you stay physically fit and build teamwork skills that are useful in everyday life, such as working collaboratively with classmates on group projects.
