Singing in Unison with Proper Posture and Breathing
Singing is the production of musical sounds using your voice. It is a way to express your emotions, ideas, feelings, and enjoyment. In Tanzania, we have different types of songs such as traditional dance songs, choir music, bongo flava, singeli, and taarabu.

Proper posture means the correct way you position your body when singing. Good posture helps you breathe easily and sing well.
Body parts to position correctly:
- Neck – keep it straight, not raised or bent
- Shoulders and arms – keep them relaxed, not tight
- Chest and stomach – keep them loose, not tight
- Legs – spread them slightly apart, not close together
You can sing while standing straight, sitting, or even dancing. The key is to keep your body comfortable and relaxed so your voice can flow freely.

Good breathing helps you sing without stopping between words. When you breathe properly, you can deliver the message of the song correctly.
Try this breathing exercise:
- Breathe in slowly through your nose for 3 seconds
- Hold your breath for 3 seconds
- Release your breath slowly through your nose for 3 more seconds
This exercise helps you learn to inhale while singing so you do not cut off words before finishing a sentence.
Singing in unison means many people singing the same melody together at the same time. A choir is a good example of singing in unison. When everyone sings together with the same tune and rhythm, the sound becomes beautiful and powerful.
Example: When the whole class sings the National Anthem, "Mungu Ibariki Afrika," together in unison, they all follow the same first voice and main voice. Each singer must keep proper posture and breathing to sing the words clearly without pausing in the middle of a sentence.
- Stand with proper posture: feet apart, shoulders relaxed, neck straight.
- Take a deep breath using the breathing exercise.
- Sing your school song or the National Anthem in unison with your classmates.
- Focus on breathing in quietly between phrases so you do not cut off any words.
In Tanzania, singing in unison with proper posture and breathing is useful during school assemblies, church choirs, and community celebrations like weddings. For example, when you sing the National Anthem at a school flag-raising ceremony, using good posture and breathing helps you sing clearly so everyone can hear and feel proud together.
