In algebra, we use letters to represent unknown numbers. When we combine numbers and letters with arithmetic operations, we create algebraic expressions made up of terms, each term having a coefficient and a variable.

A term is a single part of an algebraic expression. It can be a number alone, a letter alone, or a number multiplied by one or more letters.

Examples of terms:

  • 4k4k
  • 11m11m
  • 3pq3pq
  • 77
  • yy

When terms are joined with plus (++) or minus (-) signs, they form an algebraic expression. For example, 4k+6k4k + 6k is an expression containing two terms.
