Statistics: Collecting and Presenting Information
Statistics is a way of collecting, organizing, and presenting information so that we can understand the world better. When we count items and show the results in an organized way, we are doing statistics. For example, when we count how many pupils in our class like different fruits, we are collecting data. When we write the numbers in a list or draw a picture graph, we are presenting that data.
Statistics helps us answer questions like: Which fruit is most popular? How many pupils chose each fruit? This information helps people make decisions, such as what fruits to buy for school lunches.
Data is information that we collect by counting or measuring. In statistics, we collect data about things we want to study.
Simple Ways to Collect Data
- Counting objects — Look at a group of mixed items and count how many of each type there are.
- Asking questions — Survey your classmates about their favorite sport, food, or subject.
- Recording observations — Count how many vehicles pass by a road in ten minutes.
Example: Collecting Data in Class
A Standard VI teacher asked pupils: "What is your favorite fruit?" The results are shown in the table below:
| Fruit | Number of Pupils |
|---|---|
| Mango | 8 |
| Banana | 12 |
| Orange | 5 |
| Apple | 3 |
This table shows data. We can see that banana is the most popular fruit and apple is the least popular.
After collecting data, we organize and present it so others can understand it easily. Common ways to present data include:
- Lists and tables — Writing numbers in rows and columns
- Pictographs — Using pictures to represent numbers
- Bar charts — Using bars of different lengths to show amounts
A teacher asked pupils in Standard VI to count the types of vehicles passing their school gate one morning. The results were:
- Cars: 15
- Buses: 8
- Motorcycles: 20
- bicycles: 12
Questions
- Which vehicle was seen most?
- How many vehicles were counted in total?
- What fraction of the total were motorcycles?
Answers
- Motorcycles were seen most (20 vehicles).
- Total vehicles = 15 + 8 + 20 + 12 = 55 vehicles.
- Fraction of motorcycles = 20/55 = simplify to 4/11 of all vehicles.
Statistics helps us make sense of information in many situations:
- Shops know which products to stock
- Schools know which subjects pupils find difficult
- Health workers know which diseases are common in an area
- Farmers know which crops grow well in their region
By collecting and presenting data clearly, we can help people make better decisions.
In Tanzania, statistics is used every day in local markets. A market vendor can use statistics to know which fruits sell best each season by counting sales each day. For example, by keeping a simple record of how many mangoes, bananas, and oranges are sold, the vendor can decide which fruits to buy more of for the next week. This helps the business succeed and makes sure customers find what they need.
