The area of a circle is the amount of space inside the circle. To find the area, we use the formula: Area = π × r², where r is the radius of the circle.

Understanding the Formula

  • Radius (r) is the distance from the centre of the circle to any point on its edge.
  • Diameter (d) is the distance across the circle through the centre. The diameter is twice the radius: d = 2r.
  • π (pi) is a special number approximately equal to 3.14 or 22/7.

You can also calculate the area using the diameter:

Area=πd24Area = \frac{\pi d^2}{4}

This formula gives the same answer because d = 2r, so:

πd24=π(2r)24=π×4r24=πr2\frac{\pi d^2}{4} = \frac{\pi (2r)^2}{4} = \frac{\pi \times 4r^2}{4} = \pi r^2
