Reading and Writing Multi-digit Whole Numbers
A multi-digit whole number is a number made up of more than one digit, such as 47, 158, or 3,204. Being able to read and write these numbers correctly is important for communicating quantities in everyday life.
Before we learn to read and write numbers, we need to understand place value — what each digit means depending on its position.
| Position from right | Place value |
|---|---|
| 1st | Ones |
| 2nd | Tens |
| 3rd | Hundreds |
| 4th | Thousands |
| 5th | Ten thousands |
| 6th | Hundred thousands |
| 7th | Millions |
Example: In the number 4,582:
- 2 is in the ones place (2 ones)
- 8 is in the tens place (8 tens)
- 5 is in the hundreds place (5 hundreds)
- 4 is in the thousands place (4 thousands)
To read a whole number correctly:
- Identify the place value of each digit from left to right.
- Read the number from the digit with the highest place value.
- Use the words "and" only when there are tens and ones remaining.
Reading Numbers up to 9999
Examples:
| Number | How to read it |
|---|---|
| 1001 | One thousand and one |
| 1350 | One thousand three hundred and fifty |
| 2864 | Two thousand eight hundred and sixty-four |
| 4000 | Four thousand |
| 5729 | Five thousand seven hundred and twenty-nine |
Reading Numbers Above 10,000
Examples:
| Number | How to read it |
|---|---|
| 61,270 | Sixty-one thousand two hundred and seventy |
| 87,654 | Eighty-seven thousand six hundred and fifty-four |
| 876,543 | Eight hundred seventy-six thousand five hundred and forty-three |
| 9,261,514 | Nine million two hundred sixty-one thousand five hundred and fourteen |
Tip: When a number has zeros in the middle, we skip saying them. For example, 5080 is read as "five thousand and eighty" (not "five thousand zero hundred and eighty").

In Tanzania, you use reading and writing of multi-digit numbers every day. For example, when checking your mobile money balance or the price of goods at the market, you need to read numbers correctly. If a bag of maize at the market costs TSH 15,500 (fifteen thousand five hundred shillings), you can read this number and understand the price, then write it down if needed for budgeting or selling your crops.
