Expressing Simple Feelings in Arabic
In Arabic, we express our feelings and emotions using special sentences called exclamation sentences (جُمَل تَعَجُّبِيَّة). These sentences help us show surprise, admiration, happiness, or other feelings about something we see, hear, or experience.
1. What Are Exclamation Sentences?
Exclamation sentences are sentences that express strong feelings or emotions about something. They always end with a special mark.
2. How to Form Exclamation Sentences
We use the pattern: يَا + لَهَا/لَهُ + مِنْ + noun + adjective
- يَا لَهَا مِنْ = What a (female)
- يَا لَهُ مِنْ = What a (male)
3. Important Words for Feelings

| حَارَّةً | hot/exciting |
| لَذِيذٌ | delicious |
| مُمْتِعَةٌ | enjoyable |

From the textbook, look at this dialogue:
مُحَمَّدٌ: هَلْ سَمِعْتَ عَنْ مُباراةِ اليَومِ لِكُرَّةِ القَدَمِ؟
أَحْمَدُ: نَعَمْ، بَيْنَ فَريقَيْ يَيْلَغَا وَفَريقِ سِيمْبَا.
مُحَمَّدٌ: يا لَها مِنْ مُباراةٍ حارَّةَ!
Here, يُوسُفُ expresses his feeling of excitement about the football match using the exclamation sentence.
- Start with يَا لَهَا (for female) or يَا لَهُ (for male)
- Add مِنْ
- Add a noun (what you are talking about)

- End with the mark !
- يَا لَهَا مِنْ مَدِينَةٍ جَمِيلَةٍ = What a beautiful city!
- يَا لَهُ مِنْ طَعَامٍ لَذِيذٍ = What delicious food!
- يَا لَهَا مِنْ مُبَارَاةٍ مُمْتِعَةٍ = What an enjoyable match!
The textbook also shows these expressions:
- مَا أَحْسَنَ أَخْلَاقَكَ = How good your manners are!
- مَا أَجْمَلَ هَذَا الْيَوْمَ = How beautiful this day is!
- Use exclamation sentences to express feelings in Arabic
- Remember the pattern: يَا لَهَا/لَهُ + مِنْ + noun + adjective
- End your sentence with the exclamation mark !
- Choose the right adjective to match your feeling
In Tanzania, you can use these Arabic feeling expressions when talking with friends or family. For example, if you watch a Simba or Yanga match at a viwanja in town, you can say "يَا لَهُ مِنْ مُبَارَاةٍ حَارَّةَ!" to show excitement. You can also use them when eating delicious chipsi mayai at home and say "يَا لَهَا مِنْ طَعَامٍ لَذِيذٍ!" to express how tasty the food is.
