Using Punctuation Marks: Question Mark and Full Stop
In Arabic, just like in English, we use special marks to show what kind of sentence we are writing. The two most important marks are the question mark (alama ya kuuliza) and the full stop (kituo).
What is a Full Stop?
A full stop (kituo) is used at the end of a sentence that tells us something — it makes a statement. The sentence gives information.
Examples:
- أَنَا طَالِبٌ (I am a student)
- المَدْرَسَةُ قَرِيبَةٌ (The school is near)
- أَحْبَبْتُ الكِتَابَ (I liked the book)
What is a Question Mark?
A question mark (alama ya kuuliza) is used at the end of a sentence that asks something. The sentence is asking for information.
Examples:
- مَنْ أَنْتَ؟ (Who are you?)
- أَيْنَ المَدْرَسَةُ؟ (Where is the school?)
- هَلْ أَنْتَ بِخَيْرٍ؟ (Are you well?)
How to Know Which One to Use
Ask yourself: Is this sentence telling me something, or is it asking me something?
- If it tells you something → use a full stop (.)
- If it asks you something → use a question mark (?)
Practice Together
Look at these sentences and put the correct mark:
- أَنَا أَذْهَبُ إِلَى المَدْرَسَةِ
- هَلْ أَخَذْتَ الكِتَابَ
- أُمِّي فِي البَيْتِ
- مَا اسْمُكَ
- الأَبُ عَمِلَ كَثِيراً
Answers:
- أَنَا أَذْهَبُ إِلَى المَدْرَسَةِ . (statement)
- هَلْ أَخَذْتَ الكِتَابَ ؟ (question)
- أُمِّي فِي البَيْتِ . (statement)
- مَا اسْمُكَ ؟ (question)
- الأَبُ عَمِلَ كَثِيراً . (statement)
Important Words That Help You Know It Is a Question
These Arabic words usually mean the sentence is a question:
- هَلْ (do/does/is)
- مَنْ (who)
- مَا (what)
- أَيْنَ (where)
- مَتَى (when)
- لِماذا (why)
When you see these words, you will usually need a question mark.
Real-life application
In everyday life in Tanzania, you will use these punctuation marks when writing messages in Swahili, English, or Arabic. For example, when you send an SMS or WhatsApp message to your friend asking about school homework — "Je, umefanya kazi ya hesabu?" — you must use the question mark. When you write "Nimefanya kazi yote," you use a full stop to tell your friend that you have finished the work.
