Long Vowels in Arabic (Irabu Ndefu)

In Arabic, long vowels (harakat zaifu) are vowel sounds that last longer than short vowels. They are formed by adding specific letters to short vowel marks.

What Are Long Vowels?

Long vowels are created when a short vowel mark (dhaamma, kasra, or fatha) is followed by a special "extended" letter. These letters lengthen the sound of the vowel.

There are three types of long vowels in Arabic:
