Chinese Tones

Chinese is a tonal language. This means the way your voice goes up or down changes the meaning of a word. In English, we use tone to show feelings, but in Chinese, tone changes what the word means.

Chinese has four different tones. Each tone has its own pattern.

First Tone – High and Flat (1)

The voice stays high and steady, like singing a note. Example: ā — mā (mother)

Second Tone – Rising (2)

The voice goes up, like when you ask a question. Example: á — má (hemp)

Third Tone – Falling Then Rising (3)

The voice goes down slightly, then goes up. Example: ǎ — mǎ (horse)

Fourth Tone – Falling (4)

The voice drops down quickly, like a command. Example: à — mà (to scold)
