- Discuss the author's motives in a given text
- Deliver an oral presentation about the content of a text
- Draw inferences (conclusions) from a text
An inference (also called a conclusion) is an educated guess you make based on evidence from the text combined with your own knowledge and experience. When you infer, you read between the lines — you use details the writer has given you to figure out something that is not directly stated.
Key difference: Explicit information is directly told in the text. Implicit information is suggested but not spelled out — the reader must work it out.
Writers do not always state everything directly. They expect readers to think about what they have read and understand meanings that are hidden between the lines. Drawing inferences helps you:
- Understand the deeper meaning of a text
- Predict what might happen next
- Understand characters' feelings and motivations
- Connect what you read to your own life
- Read the text carefully — do not rush; pay attention to every detail.
- Identify the explicit facts — list what the text directly tells you.
- Use your background knowledge — think about what you already know about the topic, situation, or people.
- Connect the facts to your knowledge — ask yourself: "What do these details mean? What can I figure out from putting them together?"
- Form your inference — state the conclusion you have drawn. Make sure it is supported by evidence from the text.
Read the passage below and answer the question that follows:
Amina walked quickly through the market, keeping her head down. She passed the mango sellers without looking at their bright piles of fruit. Her pocket felt light — she had spent all her money on medicine for her grandmother. The sun was hot, and her stomach growled, but she did not stop. She had only one goal: reach home before the rain started.
Question: What can you infer about Amina's financial situation?
Step-by-step inference:
| What the text says (explicit) | What we can figure out (inference) |
|---|---|
| She kept her head down and did not stop at the mango sellers | She did not want to buy anything |
| Her pocket felt light | She had little or no money left |
| She had spent all her money on medicine | She prioritizes her grandmother's health over food |
| Her stomach growled | She is hungry but cannot afford food |
Conclusion: Amina is in a difficult financial situation. She has no money left after buying medicine, which shows she is poor and cannot afford to buy food even though she is hungry.
This inference is correct because it is supported by evidence from the text — the text does not directly say "Amina is poor," but the details about her empty pocket, her hunger, and her decision to buy medicine instead of food all point to this conclusion.
- Character feelings: What emotions is the character experiencing?
- Cause and effect: Why did something happen? What will happen next?
- Theme or message: What is the writer trying to tell us about life?
- Setting clues: What time, place, or social environment is described?
- Always support your inference with evidence from the text.
- Do not guess randomly — your conclusion must be reasonable based on what you have read.
- If the text does not provide enough information, say "cannot be inferred" rather than making up details.
- Discuss your inferences with classmates to see if others reached the same or different conclusions.
In everyday life in Tanzania, you use inference skills constantly. For example, when reading a notice at the bus station that says "Mkoa wa Mbeya — Ndege inaenda kesho saa 5 alasiri" (Mbeya Region — Flight departs tomorrow at 5 PM), you infer that you must arrive at the airport well before 5 PM, even though the notice does not explicitly say so. These skills help you understand advertisements, news articles, and instructions that do not state everything directly.
