Listening and Writing Chinese Consonants and Vowels
In Chinese, the sounds that make up syllables are divided into two main parts:
- Initials (Consonants) — the beginning sound of a syllable, like b, p, m, f
- Finals (Vowels) — the ending part of a syllable, like a, ai, ang, ou
Together, an initial and a final form a complete Chinese syllable (pinyin). For example, in the syllable bǎn, the initial is b and the final is ǎn.
When you hear a Chinese syllable, you need to identify both parts:
- Listen for the initial (consonant) — What sound comes at the beginning?
- Listen for the final (vowel) — What sound comes after the initial?
- Listen for the tone — Is the voice rising, falling, or flat?
Worked Example
Listen to this example from the textbook:
| You hear | Initial (Consonant) | Final (Vowel) | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| tēng | t | ēng | 1st tone (flat) |
| tāng | t | āng | 1st tone (flat) |
| bǎn | b | ǎn | 3rd tone (dip) |
| kuáng | k | uáng | 2nd tone (rising) |
Notice that some pairs sound very similar:
- tēng and tāng have the same initial t but different finals
- kuáng and kuàng have the same initial k and final uáng, but different tones
From the textbook exercise, practice identifying syllables. For each row, listen carefully and circle the syllable you hear.
| tēng | tāng | bǎn | bǎn |
| kuáng | kuàng | léi | wěi |
| xiě | xué | ká | kè |
| mēng | mèng | nà | ná |
| pái | pèi | hào | hāo |
When you write pinyin syllables, remember these key points:
- Write the initial first, then the final
- Use the correct tone mark — place it above the main vowel letter
- Common initials to remember: b, p, m, f, d, t, n, l, g, k, h, j, q, x, zh, ch, sh, r, z, c, s, y, w
- Common finals to remember: a, o, e, i, u, ai, ei, ao, ou, an, en, ang, eng, ong
Example Writing Practice
Write these syllables by separating the initial from the final:
| Syllable | Initial | Final |
|---|---|---|
| hào | h | ào |
| pái | p | ái |
| xué | x | ué |
| nà | n | à |
In groups, follow these steps:
- Listen to Chinese words or syllables using audio resources
- Identify the initial (consonant) and final (vowel) you hear
- Write the pinyin syllable correctly
- Compare your answers with your group members
Use online resources or the audio from your textbook to find 5 different Chinese words. For each word, write down the pinyin and circle the initial and underline the final.
- Chinese syllables are made of an initial + final + tone
- Consonants (initials) are the beginning sounds
- Vowels (finals) are the sounds that follow the initial
- Listen carefully to distinguish between similar sounds
- Practice writing both parts separately, then combine them correctly
In Tanzania, if you are learning Chinese to do business with Chinese traders at markets like Kariakoo or at the Port of Dar es Salaam, you will need to listen and write Chinese product names, prices, or quantities. For example, when ordering 5 boxes of goods, you would listen for the number and unit, then write the pinyin correctly — such as wǔ (five) and hé (box) — to confirm your order accurately.
