Completing and Submitting a Geography Project Report
This competency asks you to complete the geographical research project you began in Form Three and submit it for assessment on time. Your report must show that you can organise your research findings into a clear, logical document and present them professionally.
A complete geography project report contains the following sections:
1. Title Page
This shows the project title, your name, school, form, and date. The title should briefly describe what you investigated.
2. Introduction
Explain the background of your study. Why did you choose this topic? What problem were you trying to solve? State your objectives clearly.
3. Literature Review
Describe what other researchers or writers have said about your topic. This shows you studied existing knowledge before collecting your own data. Use sources like textbooks, reports, and reliable internet materials.
4. Research Methodology
Explain how you collected your data. Describe:
- The area where you conducted research
- The methods you used (observation, interviews, questionnaires, or focus group discussions)
- The sample size or number of people you studied
5. Data Presentation
Present your findings using tables, charts, graphs, or maps. For example, if you studied traffic flow on a busy road in Dar es Salaam, you might show your counts in a table and display trends in a bar graph.
6. Data Analysis and Interpretation
Explain what your data means. What patterns or relationships did you find? Did your findings support your expectations or not?
7. Conclusion and Recommendations
Summarise your main findings. What answers did you obtain? What suggestions do you have for addressing any problems you identified?
8. References
List all the sources you used in your report, written in a consistent format.
Imagine a student in Mwanza investigated water supply problems in their ward. Their report structure would look like this:
- Title: "Assessment of Water Supply Challenges in Nyamagana Ward, Mwanza"
- Introduction: Explains that many residents face water shortages
- Literature Review: Reviews reports from the Mwanza Water Authority
- Methodology: Used questionnaires with 50 households and observation of water points
- Data Presentation: Shows tables of survey responses and maps of water sources
- Analysis: Finds that 70% of households receive water only twice per week
- Conclusion: Concludes that infrastructure expansion is needed
- Recommendations: Suggests building more reservoirs
When you present your report to your teacher or classmates:
- Prepare: Rehearse what you will say about each section
- Be Clear: Speak loudly and explain technical terms
- Use Visual Aids: If possible, display your maps, charts, or photos
- Answer Questions: Be ready to explain your methods and findings
To ensure your project is submitted on time:
- Keep a calendar with your submission deadline
- Complete each section well before the final date
- Have your teacher review a draft earlier
- Bind or staple your report neatly before submission
- Submit the physical copy to your geography teacher on or before the due date
- Submitting incomplete sections
- Presenting data without analysis
- Using sources without proper references
- Submitting late or presenting poorly
After Form Four, you may pursue further education or work where research skills matter. For example, if you join a career in urban planning in Tanzania, you might assess traffic congestion in Arusha or land use in Dodoma. The report-writing skills you practise now will help you communicate findings clearly to local government officials and communities, enabling informed decisions that improve people's daily lives.
