Reading and Understanding Short Stories in French
When you read a short story in French, your goal is to understand the main ideas, the characters, what happens, and the message the author wants to share. This skill is called "lire et comprendre des récits courts" — reading and understanding short stories.
1. Read the Title First
The title gives you a clue about what the story is about. For example, "Promenade à vélo en bois" tells us the story is about a wooden bike ride.
2. Look at the Pictures
If there are pictures in the text, look at them carefully. They help you understand the story even when you don't know every word.
3. Read the Whole Text
Read the entire story first without stopping. Don't worry if you don't understand every single word.
4. Find the Key Information
After reading, ask yourself:
- Who? (Qui?)
- What? (Qu'est-ce que?)
- Where? (Où?)
- When? (Quand?)
- Why? (Pourquoi?)
5. Answer the Questions
Read each question carefully. Then go back to the text to find the answer.
Here is Texte 1: Promenade à vélo en bois from your textbook:
Tom et Amina liked doing wooden bike riding. One Sunday, they leave alone. They ride on a small path. The birds sing. The wind blows gently. They see a squirrel! "Look!" says Tom. After one hour, they stop. They drink water and eat a snack. Then, they return home. What a beautiful ride!

Question (a): Qui font la promenade? (Who goes on the ride?)
Answer: Tom et Amina font la promenade. (Tom and Amina go on the ride.)
Question (b): Ils utilisent quel moyen de transport? (What means of transport do they use?)
Answer: Ils utilisent un vélo en bois. (They use a wooden bike.)
Question (c): Qu'est-ce qu'ils font après une heure? (What do they do after one hour?)
Answer: Ils s'arrêtent, ils boivent de l'eau et mangent un goûter. (They stop, they drink water and eat a snack.)
