Reading Simple Descriptions in French
In this topic, you will learn how to read and understand simple descriptions of people, objects, and animals in French. When you finish this lesson, you will be able to find important information from a French text and answer questions about what you have read.
When reading descriptions, look for these important words:
For Describing People
- grand/petite – tall/small (short)
- les cheveux – hair (courts = short, longs = long)
- les yeux – eyes (grands = big)
- Il est / Elle est – He is / She is
For Describing Animals
- une tête – head
- un cou – neck
- une queue – tail
- les pattes – legs/paws
- les couleurs – colors
- long/longue – long
- court/courte – short
For Describing Objects
- C'est... – It is...
- Il est... – It is (color)
- Les couleurs – colors (jaune, noir, blanc, rouge, vert, bleu)
Follow these steps when you read a description:
- Find the name – Who or what is being described?
- Look for physical traits – What does it look like? (size, shape)
- Find colors – What colors does it have?
- Check clothing (for people) – What are they wearing?
Read this text from the textbook:
Daudi est un garçon de neuf ans. Il est petit et il a les cheveux courts. Il a de grands yeux comme son père. Daudi a beaucoup d'animaux et oiseaux : deux vaches, deux poules, deux pigeons, et aussi un chien. Son chien s'appelle Koko. C'est un grand chien avec de longs poils. Il est aussi blanc et noir.
Questions and Answers
(a) Daudi est comment? → Daudi est petit. (The text says "Il est petit")
(b) Daudi a combien d'animaux? → Daudi a six animaux. (2 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 7 actually, but let's check - two cows, two chickens, two pigeons, and one dog = 7 animals)
(c) Comment s'appelle son chien? → Son chien s'appelle Koko.
(d) Comment est son chien? → Son chien est grand avec de longs poils. Il est blanc et noir.

Checking Your Understanding
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What animal is being described? | Girafe la Grande (the giraffe) |

In French, adjectives (describing words) change to match the noun:
| English | Masculine (il/ce) | Feminine (elle/cette) |
|---|---|---|
| tall | grand | grande |
| small/short | petit | petite |
| beautiful | beau | belle |
| long | long | longue |
| short | court | courte |
Example:
- Il est grand. (He is tall)
- Elle est grande. (She is tall)
- Le stylo est petit. (The pen is small)
- La robe est petite. (The dress is small)
When you read a description, ask yourself:
- Qui? (Who?) – Who is this about?
- Comment? (How?) – What do they/it look like?
- Qu'est-ce qu'il porte? (What are they wearing?) – For people
- Quelles couleurs? (What colors?) – Colors of the object/animal
In Tanzania, you can use these description skills when you meet new people or describe items at the duka or soko. For example, if a tourist asks you "Où est le fromage?" at a restaurant in Arusha, you can describe what you see: "Le fromage est petit, blanc et rond" (The cheese is small, white and round). Being able to read and understand simple descriptions in French also helps when you read product labels, instructions, or signs in French-speaking areas.
