Expressing Future Events in French
In French, we use the near future tense to talk about what we are going to do or what will happen soon. This tense is formed with the verb aller (to go) followed by another verb in its infinitive form.
The pattern is:
Subject + aller (conjugated) + infinitive verb
Here is how aller is conjugated in the present tense:
| French | English |
|---|---|
| je vais | I am going |
| tu vas | you are going |
| il/elle va | he/she is going |
| nous allons | we are going |
| ils/elles vont | they are going |
- Je vais aller au marché demain. — I am going to go to the market tomorrow.
- Nous allons voyager pendant les vacances. — We are going to travel during the holidays.
- Ma mère va cuisiner ce soir. — My mother is going to cook tonight.
- Tu vas apprendre le français. — You are going to learn French.
| French | English |
|---|---|
| demain | tomorrow |
| prochaine semaine | next week |
| bientôt | soon |
| les vacances | holidays/vacation |
| voyager | to travel |
| jouer | to play |
| manger | to eat |
| dormir | to sleep |
| travailler | to work |
| écrire | to write |
| lire | to read |
Use the pattern to make your own sentences:
- Je vais jouer au football. — I am going to play football.
- Elle va dormir tôt ce soir. — She is going to sleep early tonight.
- Nous allons écrire une lettre. — We are going to write a letter.
- Ils vont manger à la maison. — They are going to eat at home.
When you write about what you will do during your holidays, follow these steps:
- Start with "Je vais..." (I am going to...)
- Add what you will do using an infinitive verb
- Add a time word like demain, bientôt, or la semaine prochaine
Example:
Je vais visiter Dar es Salaam pendant les vacances. Je vais jouer avec mes amis et manger des fruits. — I am going to visit Dar es Salaam during the holidays. I am going to play with my friends and eat fruits.
When you go to the market in town, you can tell your friend in French what you are going to buy next week, for example: "Je vais acheter des mangues demain" (I am going to buy mangoes tomorrow). This helps you practise French while talking about real plans in your daily life in Tanzania.
