How to Ask About the Day

To ask what day it is in French, you can say:

• Quel jour sommes-nous ? — What day is it today?
• C'est quel jour ? — What day is it?

To answer, you say:

• Nous sommes lundi. — It is Monday.
• C'est jeudi. — It is Thursday.

Notice that in French, the days of the week are not written with a capital letter unless they are at the beginning of a sentence.

How to Ask About the Date

To ask about the date in French, you can say:

• Quelle est la date ? — What is the date?
• C'est quelle date ? — What is the date?

To answer, you say the day followed by the month:

• C'est le 15 mars. — It is the 15th of March.
• Mon anniversaire est le 5 octobre. — My birthday is on the 5th of October.

Notice that in French, you use le before a number when talking about dates.

The textbook gives us a fun comptine (rhyme) to remember the days of the week:

Bonjour madame Lundi ! Comment va madame Mardi ? Très bien madame Mercredi. Dites à Madame Jeudi ! Et à Madame Vendredi, De venir danser samedi, Au bal de Madame Dimanche !

Look at this dialogue from the textbook and notice how days and months are used:

Amani: Salut Amani ! Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dans ton sac ? Bakari: Il y a un gâteau. Aujourd'hui, c'est le 15 mars, c'est mon anniversaire. Amani: Quel âge as-tu ? Bakari: J'ai dix ans aujourd'hui. Amani: Joyeux anniversaire !

In this example, you can see:

• aujourd'hui means "today"
• c'est le 15 mars shows how to say a date in French
• The birthday information includes both the day and the month

Try to complete these sentences:

1. Quel jour sommes-nous ? → Nous sommes mercredi.
2. Quelle est la date ? → C'est le 25 décembre.
3. Mon anniversaire est le 1er janvier. (Write in French: January 1st)
4. Je vais à l'école de lundi à vendredi. (Monday to Friday)
