The Concept of Folklore

Definition and Origin

Folklore refers to the traditional beliefs, customs, stories, songs, and practices of a people that are passed down orally from generation to generation. The term "folklore" was coined by William John Thoms in 1846 as another name for oral literature. It encompasses the cultural heritage of communities and reflects their way of life, values, and worldview.

Historical Background

The history of folklore cannot be separated from the history of human beings. In Africa, for example, folklore is closely associated with early human socio-cultural activities such as hunting and gathering. Usually, as the day ends, family or society members would sit together, especially during evening hours, to narrate their daily encounters. These narrations varied from person to person and included songs, proverbs, riddles, and tales. Out of these shared narratives, the genre of literature called oral literature emerged.

The American scholar Allan Dundes (1965) further expanded the concept of folklore to include a wide range of sub-genres such as myths, legends, folktales, jokes, proverbs, riddles, chants, folk songs, folk dance, folk medicine, and many others.

Sub-genres of Folklore

Folklore can be categorized into four main areas:

  • Oral literature — Includes myths, legends, folktales, proverbs, riddles, jokes, folk songs, and nursery rhymes
  • Material culture — Encompasses folk art, house designs, folk costume, food recipes, quilt and embroidery designs
  • Social folk customs — Covers folk beliefs, folk medicine, greetings and leave-taking formulas, customs, and traditions
  • Performing arts — Includes folk dance, folk drama, folk music, and oral poetry such as epics

Examples of Folklore in Everyday Life

To understand folklore better, consider these common examples from Tanzanian communities:

  1. Proverbs — Sayings like "Mwenyewe ndiye mwenyewe" that convey wisdom
  2. Riddles — Traditional brain teasers asked during gatherings
  3. Folk songs — Lullabies sung to children or songs during harvest celebrations
  4. Folk medicine — Traditional healing practices using local herbs
  5. Folk tales — Stories told by elders about clever animals or moral lessons
  6. Rituals and customs — Wedding ceremonies, initiation rites, and burial practices
  7. Folk dance — Traditional dances performed during cultural events

Characteristics of Folklore

  • Oral transmission — Passed down through speech rather than written texts
  • Collective ownership — Belongs to the community rather than an individual author
  • Traditional and adaptive — Evolves gradually while maintaining core elements
  • Reflects culture — Embodies the values, beliefs, and experiences of a people

Folklore and Oral Literature

Folklore and oral literature are closely related. Oral literature is essentially the literary aspect of folklore—the creative and artistic expressions within the broader category of folk traditions. While all oral literature is folklore, not all folklore qualifies as oral literature; for example, folk medicine and material culture are folklore but not oral literature.

Real-life application

Understanding folklore is valuable in everyday life in Tanzania. For example, when participating in community events such as weddings or cultural festivals, recognizing traditional folk songs, dances, and customs helps preserve cultural identity. Additionally, knowledge of folk medicine and traditional healing practices, though complemented by modern healthcare, remains important in many rural communities where traditional healers still play a significant role in healthcare delivery.
